I'll Sleep When I'm Dead

I first heard the quote "I'll sleep when I'm dead from Sean P. Diddy Combs a multi-millionaire (and almost billionaire) hip hop mogul. He brags about needing only 3 hours of sleep a day.

This goes along with many high achievers who say they only need 3 or 4 hours of sleep a day. But it flies in the face of medical evidence that says one of the biggest health threats today is "Sleep deprivation".

I was on the Sean P Diddy Combs wagon for a few years, but since reading about the affects of sleep deprivation I'm prone to get more sleep lately. All the money in the world is not worth my health risk.

But I'm interested in where you stand.. How much sleep do you get on average.

Thanks for sharing.

if you are injured or tired out you need sleep for your body to repair and regenerate tissue .

but if you get energy from what you to instead of get drained by what you do you do not need to sleep as much .

There are people who are able to function on 3 hours sleep a day. That is the minority...most of us need at least 5 to 8 hours sleep for recovery.

3 to 4 hours won't allow for much, if any, regeneration.

Your body will fight against the outside world 24/7, but it isn't until you fall asleep that the regeneration steps up and does an effective job. Having a sickness is a prime example. During these times your body wants to rest, so it can fight it off. Try not falling asleep and see how well you will feel.

I am never going to be a person to only get 3 hours of sleep.
Similar to Samuel, I wake up when i'm ready, and this is usually after 5 to 6 hours of sleep.

    They are artists.

What do you expect them to say?

Unless you are on Modafinil, your focuses decreases dramatically after sleep deprivation. So even if you would want to work, one hour of focus is worth three of working when sleep depraved.

    9-10 hours.

Anyone who says he or she can function off 3-4 hours must be

    1. Quite old and fast consistently
    2. Lying
    3. Jacked up on stimulants to hide fatigue
    4. Perform minimal exercise if any
    5. Lying

Sometimes, people get those rare 3-4 hour nights in here and there following by a semi-productive day, which turns into "I get everything done on 4 hours of sleep and I'm also Superman."

Good points. There seems to be a prevailing mindset in today's society to almost brag about how little sleep you've had. Either to get indirect sympathy, envy or display the Superman or Superwoman complex to others.

You seldom here people bragging about how long they sleep.

If you said, "I sleep 9 hours everyday" Many people would instantly think ... time waster ... slacker ... or even loser!

I work from home and I sleep about 9-11 hours each day. Do I care what people think? No, because while I sleep lots, I still earn money in my sleep. I'd rather have this than be someone who gets 4 hours of sleep a day, earns good money in a 9-5 job and then dies at 36 from a heart attack/exhaustion.

Be careful, you're gonna make a lot of people envious (or jealous) talking like that.

          stv105,

          Very true, my friend!

The 9-5 "salaried professional" jobs are long gone.... here in the US.

Many people are literally "killing themselves" working 50-60 hours per week at a salaried job for "good money" just to avoid being fired....

The money is NOT that "good," when you break it down into an hourly rate, they are making what a "skilled laborer" makes.... NOT what a "white collar" professional should make.

Agreed on all accounts. It also matters mainly on what your day looks like. Funny you say that last bit, because sometimes I get that as well. You sleep that much?!

Well, the last time someone tried to finish a day in my line of work, they ended up at the hospital on anti-inflammatory painkillers, with a high fever, cramps, and took the next two days off from their regular work.

Needless to say we now see eye to eye. Some need more sleep, some less. All depends on what your day looks like.

I've done the superman 3-4 hour thing.

I did it in high school and well into my twenties
working 2 shifts. It's not all it's cracked up to
    be.

There are whole periods of my life I don't remember
that's how tired I was. I feel better and have more energy
with about 6 hours of sleep but it doesn't always happen.

The age factor plays a big role too I suppose. For example, when I was in my twenties I could club 5 nights a week until 2 in the morning and be at work by six and work a full day. And get my sleep on Sunday.

I wouldn't dare try that now that I'm in my 50's.
It would have to be a super special occassion for me to do it one day if I had to get up at 6 a.m. for work.

There are a lot of drugs floating around these days so I take the "I don't need any sleep because I am productive 22 hours a day" comments with a grain of salt. I am sure I could be productive 22 hours a day if I was medicated. But I am not, so I will take my afternoon nap and get a full night's rest.

Yes, I do need a power nap each day as it is essential to my happiness. I am not old, I am just sleepy.

I agree with the "stimulants" comments, although I've never used them.
I knew plenty who did in the high school, college days. They crashed hard.
      Not my style.

Over the last 10 years I've had short periods of 1-2 hours sleep per night.
That was followed by extreme exhaustion. I learned that you can fall asleep
while standing up, and did. More than once. I wouldn't recommend it.

Years ago there was a DJ who was trying to set a record for hours awake.
Doing so set off some type of psychological problem that ended up costing him
      his job.

Bon Jovi has a song named like this quote

I like to get a proper sleep (7-8 hours) as this has proven to be beneficial for many things, not only for a better concentration I am glad that, because of the IM I am able to sleep enough and don't have to get up early.

Diddy also said "My eyes are Merlow, I don't remember the last time my eyes was white." When this happens it's time to go to sleep.

But seriously, I work a lot and get roughly about 4-5 hours of sleep but you have to train your body to do this.

Also its unnecessary to get 2-3hours if you are NOT pressed to complete a task. For example maybe you are up against a hard deadline or something.

Other than that, do yourself a favor and get some rest. Your body will Thank You!

I would have said the same thing when I was younger.

Time has shown me how little I knew back then.

Ariana Huffington is a HUGE proponent of getting plenty of sleep, and has succeeded wildly. JD Rockefeller - modern day net worth of his, would be $275 Billion - napped during the day and slept often. Some guys like P Diddy have the engine, but I prefer to slow and grow rich the easier way Thanks!

Keep in mind that the folks you're referring to have/had a large staff to complete the work, while the boss slept.

Yeah I am not a huge fan of the "i'll sleep when i'm dead" mentality. I am all for making most of your work when you are working, but we all need sleep and when we don't get that sleep productivity actually goes down quite a bit. If people feel like they can get away with only three hours of sleep per day, great for them! It's not for me though. I need at least 6 hours of sleep to have a fully productive day the next day.

Sleep needs do vary person to person. My spouse needs 8 hours but I feel great with 5. Every person really needs to find out what works for them, it can make a world of difference in how they feel each day.
