'Karma' is originally ancient Indian Language Sanskrit word. Literally it means 'deeds' or 'actions'. It is key concept in Hinduism, Buddhism and other religions.

There are lots of literatures available on Karma philosophy. The concept has even inspired Hollywood movies like The Matrix, The Butterfly Effect etc.

There are in many laws of nature based on karma philosophy that govern our lives as mentioned below:

1. The first or the primary law of Karma: It states that 'As you sow, so shall you reap'. Your present experiences good or bad are the direct effects of the intent or the actions that you have performed in the past. Similarly the intent or the actions that you do today will determine the future. This is also known as the law of cause and effect. What you put in the universe comes back to you.

2. The law of creation: It says that no event in your life happens without your participation. Each one of us is an integral part of the universe. Whatever is happening around us gives us the clues of our inner state. Thus you are responsible for creating your own life.

3. The Law of acceptance: When you refuse to accept a situation, it will continue for you till you accept it. Only after willful acceptance, you can work towards changing the situation.

4. The Law of growth in spirit: For us to grow in spirit, it is we who must change and not the people, places and the things around us. You have control over only yourself. When we change who and what we are within our heart, our life changes too.

5. The Law of responsibility: We mirror what surrounds us and what surround us mirrors us. Whenever there is something wrong around, there is something wrong in us. The responsibility of what's happening in our lives is entirely ours whether we accept this fact or not.

6. The Law of connection: Everything in the universe is deeply connected. Each step leads to next and so on. Neither the first nor the last step is of greater significance. The past, present and future events are all connected.

7. The Law of focus: We can't think of two things at the same time. When you want to focus on higher values, you cannot have lower thoughts in your mind.

8. The Law of belief: If you believe something to be true then sometime in your life you'll be called upon to demonstrate that truth. That's a chance to put what you say into practice.

9. The Law of here and now: Brooding over what happened with us in the past, prevents us from being totally in the here and now. Old thoughts and old patterns of behavior prevent us from having new ones.

10. The Law of Change: History repeats itself until we learn the lesson that we need to change the path. Mistakes remain mistakes till we accept them as learnings and move on to make a change by implementing those learnings.

11. The Law of patience and reward: Rewards of lasting value require patient and persistent efforts. Whenever you want to create something that would give the desired rewards, keeping patience is inevitable.

12. The Law of significance: The value of something is a direct result of the energy and intent that is put into it. When you put in more energy into something, its significance and value invariably increases.

hi, I am a strong believer in Karma but find it very hard to implement when struggling with my daily troubles. it is hard to stay focused with all the distractions in my life and no amount of positive thinking is going to stop the bank from shutting down my business.
I also find it hard to deal with the negative influences that I have no control over (my 4yr old daughter is autistic and being bullied at pre-school) this causes my partner, myself and our daughter anguish.
    any ideas?

      Dear Amy,

I understand that you are having great deal of struggle in your life.

Looking at your life from karma philosophy perspective, I only have to say that whatever hardships you are experiencing in the present is the result of some of your actions knowingly or unknowingly done in the past (or even in your past life) that have manifested themselves in the form of your troubles and struggles. According to Buddhism, it is called as 'Karmic retribution'.

The first step to get out of this process is acceptance of the fact that you are responsible for everything whether good or bad happening in your life. I know it is hard, but it's a fact.

Next is to believe that you can change your life with consistent positive actions; without getting demotivated by your existing negative influences.
You must believe that every problem in the world has a solution and your problems also can be solved with positive attitude, approach and actions.

I understand your 4 year old daughter is autistic and facing problems at school. Rather than facing anguish, you and your family members need to be strong and positive. Give your child the confidence that she's not less than any other child.
Albert Einstein, Mozart and many great personalities were victims of autism but they became super achievers in their lives. Even your daughter has the potential to be part of the league of these great personalities. Nothing is impossible!
You may talk to her school teachers, Principal etc and take their assistance to create a positive atmosphere for your daughter at the school.

Any good karma that you do today will help you to overcome the effects of negative karma of the past and pave the way for better future!

      Best wishes!

      Vikram

A few more insights on Karma philosophy...

When a bird is alive it eats ants; but when the bird is dead ant eats the bird. Time and circumstances can change at any time. You may be powerful today. But remember time is more powerful than you. One tree makes a million matchsticks. But only one match stick is needed to burn many trees. So be good and do good

      Great way to put it.

The interconnected nature of all beings at all times goes hand-in-hand with the concept of karma, at least as I understand it.

If, before each action, we stop for a second and ask how our actions might affect others and the world in general, then there would be much less concern and worry later on our part regarding the consequences of our actions.

We should always think, consider, and then act, instead of acting first and then managing the after-effects, which often leads to the too little too late scenario. This probably won't slow us down in every day life, and even if it does take a second or two, I think that second or two would be well spent.

Dain, I totally agree with you.
Most of the time people act without thinking of the repercussions of their actions. Later as a hindsight they realize that they should have given some time to take the right actions. But that's like an arrow released from a bow; it can never come back but by the law of Karma, its effect gets boomeranged in our lives.
That's why old English proverb goes..."Look before you leap"

Do you have perhaps any books or something else about these deep stuff?
I'm really interested in this, thank you for the amazing share!
Thank you Charles for your words of appreciation. I know when we touch upon a deep subject like Karma philosophy, an article like this is just a drop in the ocean.

If you really wish to know more on this subject, I would respectfully recommend you to read Bhagwad Gita-The 5000 year old epic literature of Hinduism. You'll get an in depth understanding of Karma philosophy.
