{Tough Love} If You're Asking Permission for Your Dreams You're Not an Entrepreneur

Whether you're looking to:

Bring in a little extra dinero, trying to build a mighty online empire or just sharing your story and expertise with the world, it's no secret I believe you NEED an email list...

...And there is no better time to start building it (or growing it) then TODAY!!

I'll share why in a minute. First...

The other day I had lunch with a new biz connection and the chat turned really unsettling.
So the lady asks me "What are your big picture intentions for your biz and life?" Which I have to say was better than the stale "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" - that ones always grated on my nerves!

Anyhoo, I proceeded to breakdown my planned biz growth for the next few years, which includes take home revenue in the seven figures. Yes, I said SEVEN figures.

I could literally see her body language shift as she grew increasingly uncomfortable as I yammered on. She, like so many, considers my dream of making millions in the next few years as, well....unattainable.

With a unintentionally patronizing head tilt (you know the one I'm talking about), she nervously chuckled and says "Don't we all sweetie! What REALISTIC long term goals do you have?" Yeah, she basically just bitch slapped the hell out of my dreams.
Strangely, in that same moment, a rush of clarity came over me.

Poor thing, she's what I call a "Jaded Dreamer".

You know the type. They have dreams BUT they don't actually believe in them. In fact, they believe dreams are just an outlet for wishing for all those impossible things we want. **** THAT! I honestly feel bad for them!

I am way too damn smart, driven and fantastic to apologize for my ambitious dreams or water them down for those folks that don't believe in their own.

I'll be damned if I am going to shoot for only that which OTHERS think I can have or give me permission to have. I'll be damned if I'm only going to forbid myself anything too lofty. I believe in myself and my skills too much for all that crazy talk.

Can you relate?

Now don't get me wrong...

My dreams have evolved, morphed and led me down paths that were all wrong for me, BUT without them I would have wasted far more time wandering around blind settling for only what others told me existed instead of what I knew was out there.

To those "jaded dreamers" like the woman I had lunch with I would love to know...

What the hell happened that made you stop believing in your dreams?!

It's usually closely correlated to how you personally perceive success and failure.
Let me ask you this - How many things can you look back at NOW with an abundance of clarity that only offered confusion and struggle for years?!

I bet if you get real you'll see that you've actually gotten more clarity from your failures then you have from your successes. The truth is...

We overcome far more when we fail, but it's all in our mindset.

Instead of holding yourself back because of the tough times, here's a wild idea, why not believe in yourself because of the tough times? Try it and see how it fits!

Profess your dreams loudly and proudly and make NO apologies for how ambitious they are! And no matter what, NEVER...

Water down your dreams for the sake of someone else!

To all you "jaded dreamers" - with a heaping serving of tough love - who the hell died and left you a dream approver?!

So here's the thing:

How can I be so certain my dream of SEVEN figures is not only attainable but will in fact happen within a few short years?

My dirty little secret is....

I'm already living off my last lofty dream. Take that dream crushers!

If I listened to all the "jaded dreamers" that told me I could never build a business that would bring in enough revenue to free me from my miserable day job, WELL...

...I wouldn't be enjoying my brisk 10 second commute to my office, I wouldn't be basking in the luxury of not working with assholes anymore nor would I have been able to travel as much as I have in the last year.

I'd be certifiably bitter, unhappy and jaded as all hell.

Instead, I fancy myself a "Rational Realist"! And I live to fulfill my loftiest goals!

Now, take a look at my revenue growth from my email list over the last couple years.
Obviously things are going pretty good, but look a little closer at this graph for a minute. (Hint: zoom in close to 2011)

Yep, I made virtually NADA! Then in 2012 & 2013 things picked up pretty dramatically.
What's the big lesson here? I'm NOT telling you this to brag or toot my own horn - I like to do that in private. (insert gasp)

Truth is, I couldn't have reaped the rewards of my lofty dream of self employment if I didn't first and foremost believe in that dream.

And that's the BIG PROBLEM with many solopreneurs looking to build or grow a profitable email list.

Like the "jaded dreamer" I had lunch with, they don't believe in their dream of building a profitable list with the expertise they ALREADY have.

Since they focus on their failures, they never get around to starting.
They say things like:

"I don't have any marketing or writing skills..."
"I'm not even sure where to start..."
"I'm not ready yet, maybe when..."

But no one who has attained their lofty goals has ever said shit like this. Especially when it comes to building an email list!

In fact, look at the most successful entrepreneurs out there, they rarely make goals UNLESS they are lofty and ambitious. Go big or go home, baby!

This is because they believe in themselves and their skills. Instead of getting jaded by their failures, they stay focused on attaining their dreams. Lofty dreams at that.

They focus on the ONLY thing that really matters...

GETTING STARTED!

Now my question to you is, do you believe in YOUR OWN lofty dream of self employment?!

If you believe, all you need are the right resources, tools and training to get you there.

See, most people try and figure things out on their own (GUILTY!!), which is why they struggle for years and ultimately become a jaded dreamer.

One of my favorite quotes is from Paulo Coelho:

"There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure."

AIN'T THAT THE TRUTH!

Now let's circle this back to building and growing an email list...

You probably either:

1. Have not started building an email list (and know you should)
Or...
2. Have an email list that you've made little to no money from

Here's the deal:

I believe in everyone's lofty dreams. Especially that drive that gets us entrepreneurial types going.

I believe EVERY business needs an email list

And....

I believe there is no better time then right now to build a profitable email list of raving and loyal fans...that want what YOU have/know right now!

If you're one of those people that haven't started building an email list yet, do yourself and your dreams a favor and start TODAY. To help you get started check out this free video training series I put together on the, Top 10 Questions About List Building. (no optin required)

If you're one of those people that have an email list (but you're unhappy with the growth and profits of that list), then start growing it!

Look, you can delay doing all of this, it's really no skin off my nose, but you should know one very important thing:

The longer you delay starting, the farther you are from the freedom of self employment and living the lifestyle you deserve!

So, why not get started TODAY? And profit from your email list THIS YEAR?

We all have a little "Jaded Dreamer" in us, and that's ok...

But, if there is only one thing you do after reading this:

Embrace your lofty dreams from this point forward! If you don't believe in your dreams, you WILL never attain them. That's a promise!

The OP brings up a good point (among several others):

For the most part, those who don't believe in their dreams or live their lives through the lens of past failure are highly unlike to support yours. They will, in fact, take every and any chance to tell you that yours are too lofty, too out of reach, too crazy. It's not their fault. Their tendency to allow their past to narrow their view of the present blocks them from comprehending any reality but their own constricted one.

When someone, like the OP, challenges this reality, they backfire and try to bring the challenger back into the same boat, so to speak, of misery and trouble and mediocrity.

Well said, Dain! It's a shame that so often it's harder to see hope after experiencing the lost and failures that are usually responsible for the jaded dreamer in us.

Do you think there's a way to inspire and empower people to recognize their own lofty dreams and get them to believe in them.... So that we can all actually support one another in attaining our loftiest dreams?

Yes it becomes quite hard for some to have hope after defeat because failure often always leaves a traumatic or negative memory imprint, which projects itself as possible future loss and stunts our ambitions. In short, will see the future through the lens of the past and ignore the only moment we really have: Now.

Once people realize this, things get a lot easier. Unfortunately not many "realize" it even reading or hearing this.

Other than that: "It's better to hang out with people better than you. Pick out associates whose behavior is better than yours and you'll drift in that direction." - Warren Buffet

          DreBeltrami,

For encouragement and support, the best thing is to "step into" their dreams with them.

When someone says, "I am going to be the Dating expert."

Don't just nod and say, "That is nice."

Instead... Say, "That sounds interesting.... You'll be able to help lots of people find love. That is a very important basic need we all have. What are you planning to do? Write a book? Create a blog? Start a Coaching program?"

          Then, let her answer.....

This allows her to envision what the future can be....

You can also ask, "How can I help?" ALWAYS a good question!

Of course, your response will be different for different "dreamers"... :-)

at this point there is really no need to evangelize people or inspire or empower .. as the old model is falling apart and tech and automation are going to eliminate the concept of a job .. in the next 20-30 years .

there is no longer a working system of mass marketing that tell people how to be like everyone else . and the education system has degenerate to take this drug to be normal so you can pass this test .

people have been trained to get jobs in the western world at least ..for the past 100 years ..and most people are still working along that training .from the age 5-25 people are trained to build a career .. that is nearly 20 years an a huge amount of time almost every day..

just how long should it take them to learn to dream again ..for me it took ten to 15 years ..but most people don't go nuts for several years .

learning to produce things and live of profits or directly trade with others is something people will have to learn how to do again .

you don't bring somone int a gym the first time and point at the bar withh 800 pound on it that a small fraction of the earths population can lift and get them to dream about lifting it .

but this is what is done in the success industry .

most people don't need millions to change their lives .. they need a much more enjoyable way to earn thousands a month ..then they can work up from there .

80 percent of people do not like the jobs they have ..I know i usualy don't like about 80 pecent of what involve having a job .

so for most people.. work they enjoy doing that pays for the life they have now would be a major step up ..

people define themselves by what they do .. and if what they do makes them happy and pays the bills ..it might not be greatness..it may just be great for them .

Knowing is better than dreaming though .

4 months ago what i am doing now was just a dream with no idea where the money was going to com from .. then things happened ..

now i know how i want to live, how much i really need to maintain it . and the path to expanding the lifestyle after it ..also many of the logistcs ..that i couldn't learn with research online .

then there is a perceptual thing here that i heard about but really didn't believe ..

being white , and being American or at least from the USA ..people assume you are rich just being here and ..they don't believe you if you try an tell them you are not lol ..

and actually once i get back to the states and work to put the income i need together .. the life i will have when i get back.here. so much better than i could have dreamed several months ago.

One might argue that "great for you" is greatness...for them.

KUDOS for reaching for what you knew was out there but couldn't see, Odah! It sounds like the last few months have been true transformation, which is what we're all trying to attain.

Cheers to all your continued success. I LOVE a story of triumph, but don't we all.

Great tips here. Thanks, DreBeltrami for your inspirational post.

One point you made indirectly by sharing this naysayer's reaction... be careful who you share your dreams and enthusiasm wtih. Just popped up in one of the newsletters I subscribed to, and it's oh so true.

Oh, and one of the Schwarzenegger videos in this section also made that same point!

Good thing you don't let this sort of thing get you down. But it can be hard, depending on where in your process you are.

So I think it's important (at least for most people) that you don't let people rain on your parade needlessly.
