The Psychology Behind The Ice Bucket Challenge

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is taking the Internet world by storm and the great thing about it is Hollywood stars are doing it too. I don't know if it is because it is for a cause or because the challenge and the idea is cool. It is going viral right now. What do you think about it?

I think it's a case of attention-starved nobodies that have little understanding of physics and gravity. These videos would be hilarious if I didn't suspect that a few of the participants actually died in the attempt. Ok, maybe it is funny either way.

I just saw our neighbors (next door condo complex) an hour ago film their Ice Bucket Challenge. Last night my brother got named on Facebook for the challenge. The numbers show that a MUCH higher % of money has been raised... that amount is growing every day (http://www.alsa.org/news/media/press...ge-082014.html ). Is that a bad thing?

Successful Viral Fundraising seems to be the factual results.

I think the virility of it is amazing. I wish more people put focus on making a small donation and dumping ice water over themselves OR making a large donation. Additionally, I wish more people were explaining who ALS is, that it is terminal, who to donate to and where, and that they expressed a place to donate to where most of the money is going toward immediate help to families suffering from ALS or that moer than 30 cents on every dollar was actually going to research.

That being said, it is amazing what social media can do to raise even mediocre awareness and increase donations.

I found this piece of information, quite a gem really:

What it’s like to live with ALS – Quartz

Though the challenge has lost its meaning and mostly done for fun, it did raise a lot of funds for ALS advocacy. So what does it feel to have ALS? Can a person really 'emphatize' what it's like to be 'paralyzed' in a chilling moment when doused with ice water? Maybe. In that fleeting moment we understand and we feel-- that these people who need the money for a cure research, have felt for a long time.

This is a likely conclusion, though the ice water causes a shocked sensation to the person. And, as some others have pointed out, everyone is getting their five minutes of fame in this way as you actually have to post yourself being doused with the ice water. Friends showing off for friends and no one wants to be the loser that didn't take the challenge. And, with that being said, a money donation is going to do more good for helping cure the illness than all the viral videos in the world. So, let's not lose sight of what the real goal is here, not just to draw attention to ALS but raise money too.

Well my wife just got nominated last night... getting my camcorder ready.

I've been watching the daily news on the ALS site. It looks like they have been adding about $9 million in daily donations the last few days.

It's great that the charity is benefiting from it but it really is a stupid "challenge".

Gee here's an idea how about these nutjobs just donate money. Do people really need to see someone dunk an ice bucket on their heads to reach into their pockets? Pathetic!

I watched a video about what ALS really is and I'm gald that people have found a way to spread awareness. Up until seeing these challenges, I had no idea what ALS was and how serious it was.
