Stop Suffering from Information Overload

I know that many new internet marketers suffer from information overload. As time goes by, they are lost in so many methods, courses, blogs and so on. I know how this feels. I was in the same situation for a long time. But eventually I figured out how to solve the problem. So I'd like to give you some advises.

1.Treat internet marketing as a business

I used to treat internet marketing as a game for making money. But I was wrong. I can't do it well if I don't do it professionally as a real business man. So I spent much less time reading forum posts, instead I spent much more time reading many business books and learning from some really high quality online courses.

I think the No. 1 reason why you are lost in the "sea of information" is because you haven't learned the fundamentals of business and marketing. For example, one of the fundamentals of marketing is AIDA. Attention--->Interest--->Desire--->Action. Many people can't do marketing well because they don't obey this rule.

Let's take link building for example. You need to write extraordinary content to get people's attention and interest. And your content must be useful for your link prospects. Only in this case, they will have the desire to link to you. And you should send them an outreach email to ask them to take action(build a link for you). But many people just keep spamming to get links. They try many ways to get links, but the results are poor.

After you learn the fundamentals of business and build up a business mindset. You will have a filter to filter out the spam information and find out the valuable information you need. You will know what works, what doesn't.

2. 80/20 Rule

It's a very simple rule that can be applied to many things. Referring to internet marketing courses, I think 80% of the courses are garbage, ONLY 20% courses are good and helpful. So focus on those 20% courses.

3. Try to find as much proof as possible when you consider buying a course

Any reviews for the product? Any reviews from some authorities? Any reviews that say they have already made money from the course? Any screenshots, statistics or success stories? And is there any conflict between the proofs? This is very important. If a guy said he made 100,000 dollars by selling a product that was $100. Then he said the traffic was 5000. That means he made 1000 sales from 5000 visitors. That's very suspicious because the conversion rate was 20%! But for most of the products, the conversion rate is less than 10%. There are many scams. You should find out the answers for the questions above before making decision.

4.Take action

Every marketing is a test. The best way to do test is taking action. The best way to get rid of information overload is to take some action. Yes, you want to learn more things, but you can take action at the same time. For example, you can spend 2 hours learning and 1 hour taking action everyday. You just have to keep one thing in mind, don't put yourself in too much risk. For example, when you try PPC, you must set your daily budget low at the beginning.

5.The simple rule

If you want to make some money, target the buying keywords to build your web pages. If you want to make more money, build your email list. If you want to make even more money, make your own products, and add up-sell products, membership products to your website. Simple as that. That's all you need to know about making money online.

6.Don't expect instant result

You are building a system. You are building a business. And that can't happen overnight. Early failures means opportunities for you to learn and improve yourself. Nothing more. Why you suffer from information overload? Because you don't stick to one plan. Why you don't stick to that plan? Because you can't see result fast. So don't expect fast result at the beginning.

Thank you sharing. This can definitely help the "shinny object" syndrome that a lot of us suffer with, always buying new info products because it promises to be the magic key, but then most often we rarely take action with the any of the info in the products.

I definitely learned that lesson the hard way. I now pretty much follow what you laid out here

    Great post!

I think your post pretty much sums up the reality of what it takes to be successful not only in IM but any business venture someone would start.

Stay focused, work hard and don't expect immediate results. Believe in yourself and success will follow.

I would be interested in a few book recommendations from you. I am fighting the "shiny object" syndrome and forcing myself to stay with my original plan. Buzz words are a distraction to simply building the site and publicizing my new venture. Everything else is just noise.

Thank you for stopping the spin for me.

    That's good advice.

I think you come into IM as an empty vessel, ready to learn, and then you constantly look for something to fill you up (forums, WSOs, products etc). Instead of coming up with your own idea for a niche or website or a way to make money, you start looking for "how to..." and you become dependent on the input of someone else that you think knows more than you.

In order to stop information overload, you must stop searching for answers and start creating them.

After you get the basics of IM down, you have to start really thinking about what YOU want to do, what will you be happy doing and then start doing it, instead of constantly reading about what's working for someone else.

You have to stop researching and consuming more information without a definite purpose.

One of techniques I try to implement ruthlessly is an idea I believe I got from the 4 Hour Work Week in the section about limiting the amount of information you consume, which is that you only research things that are absolutely necessary for completion of the very next step or your very next task.

So if I'm building a website, let's say the first I have to do is get a domain name, so that's what I research (if I don't know how to do that). I don't start building a website by watching a dozen youtube videos about wordpress or SEO....only research what's necessary to complete the very next step.

It's very difficult to do, because we're trained to be easily distracted and unfocused. I use pocket (free web app that stores articles, videos etc to reviewed later) when I find myself getting off topic in my research. It's great to just be able to click one button and have that distraction disappear and be able to read it later if I really need to (mostly, I don't need to though).

I don't like to recommend book to people. Because something suitable for me may not be suitable for you. Someone once recommended All Marketers Are Liars by Seth Godin to me, but I just didn't like to read that book, although I know that's one of the best books for marketing. So you have to find out what you like, what you are interested in reading. You can go to your local bookstore or Amazon to browse some books and check out reviews and find out what you are interested in.

Good points! It's very important to find out what you like doing, what you really want to do. Then you will have much less distraction and your life will be much more enjoyable.

These are very useful tips. Information overload usually happens when I'm too excited about the the subject I'm learning about, which make me really counter productive. Definitely going to use some of your advise!

  • To be honest I actually enjoy the process of consuming vast amount of information and try make sense of all the clutter, and fit all the pieces of the puzzle together. It's during these moments that I sometimes get aha moments, and brainstorm new ideas/concepts.

However, I agree with what you guys have mentioned above, especially about being more productive by having a 'Definite Purpose' with your research...
