the best way to monetize your app is combine 2 ways:
1. in-app purchases of virtual goods
2. incentive offers that user have to complete to receive virtual goods in your app

This method covers two main groups of mobile users - those who are willing to pay and those who are not ready

Apart from Ads, in app purchases especially for games which are addictive. See Candy Crush for example.

Ads is the way to go, unless you can code a premium version of the app you are making with a few extra features.
