real time mobile app marketing challenge on $0 budget
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Hi All,

I have launched a mobile app last week called "Positives", it helps practice and test your positivity with 2 mins of effort per day.

I am a complete newbie in this space, and have no knowledge in app marketing.

I have done no pre launch marketing either, like I mentioned "#TotalNewbieNoExperience".

However, I have decided to set myself a SMART goal:

Go from 10 to 1000 app downloads by 31 May 2015, since I read somewhere 2/3 apps fail to get 1000 downloads.

Did I mention, I have a $0 budget at this point.

For the simple reason that i want this app to be available for free, because the world needs Positivity at a low cost, hence no spending money.

So between now and the deadline, I will teach myself about app marketing techniques using free resources only, apply them again using free resources only, and keep going until I crack it.

I will update my progress, what steps I take, what works, what doesn't, what's easy, what's not, and so on, since I believe many others can benefit from my lessons learnt.

Also, inviting your support, any suggestions, ideas, known techniques that you can share would immensely help.

I will keep you posted on how I execute any of your suggestions and any results I get.

Thanks for your interest and support in advance!

Hi All

Been reading up like crazy over the last few days, putting a marketing strategy together. Couple of things to do upfront:
1. Got some feedback from people who downloaded the app, and decided to make a few quick changes, basically you don't have to register upfront to browse others' positive messages (aka Tives), you only have to register if you start entering your own. Submitting for update to App Store today.
2. Next big thing is to create a quick video. Videos have more power than text, so researching quick and DIY ways to create an effective video. Shout out to Amy Porterfield for her brilliant podcast on this very topic.

Few other things ticking along on the side:
1. Created a Twitter account called @Tivescomunity, and tweeted about my app, have 40 followers and counting
2. Checking out positivity forums on reddit and quora, yet to figure how to most effectively use this platform without spamming.

Till next time.

Just had a brainwave!

If any of you are doing something similar, i.e. Promoting your new mobile app, and would like to join this challenge with me, then please do, I would very much appreciate some buddies.

Couldn't hurt to keep each other accountable, bounce off ideas and learn from each other

Reading "Feed a starving crowd" by Robert Coorey, it is free to download from his website, is tailored for new businesses with no list, no following, no budget.

It is detailed and actionable, it has cut down my research time considerably, should start putting an action plan together soon

Also downloaded the 2 free apps 'Mention' and 'Zite' to monitor the social media for content related to 'Positivity'. At some point this should help me identify my target audience and influencers.

Till next time.

Marketing strategy for Positives app
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Have finally put together the marketing strategy, keeping in mind content is key, and people are hungry for easy access to curated information, my strategies are centred around this, here it goes.

1. Convert my app page into a niche site on Positivity, currently I am in the process of revamping my page accordingly, the objective is to provide easy access to resources on Positivity

2. Write guest blogs, this will be mainly about actual experiences, as I myself put various techniques to use myself, I will share it with the community

3. Create a explainer video and put it on YouTube, I need to put my "2 minute per day Positivity" idea out there

4. Similarly create an infographic page and put it on Pinterest

I will be closely tracking the 4 items through the following phases: Research, Implement, Monitor, Optimize, Result.

Excited to get rolling, will keep you posted.

Quick status checkpoint:
1. App page coming along, needs polishing, formatting and a strategy for keeping the content fresh
2. Created a guest blog, pending review at pickthebrain.com
3. Video production in progress - will give more details on "how to" in near future
4. Pinterest board created, couple of free android apps "Cut Paste Photo" and "Phonto" did the job, check it out: http://bit.ly/inspiringmoments

Till next time.

Some momentum on social media ( and a question )
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Folks,

There's been a breakthrough over the last couple of days !!

To my obvious delight my community blog got published by pickthebrain.com.

Here's the link if you are interested: How Just 2 Minutes a Day Can Make You A Positive Person

Suggestions and feedback very welcome (as this is my first ever published blog).

Now for some actions and learning's from this exercise:

I had chosen pickthebrain to submit my blog as they are one of the top motivational blogs with huge following, with a really easy, no strings attached process to submit a guest blog.

Turns out it was a good decisions, since my blog is getting shared on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, LinkedIn and Pinterest ever since.

It has made its way on Flipbook and got reflipped several times.

In short, I am thrilled with the reach of the blog, and the interest it is generating.

I am expecting some traffic from the blog, since it presents a link to our app landing page (also our niche site).

Here's what we did after finding out about it:
1. Posted on our Pinterest and Twitter accounts
2. Set up traffic alerts for our app landing page/niche site
3. Cleaned up our site to make it more presentable to visitors
4. Cranked up the work on our video production

The question:

How to convert readers of the blog to app download and usage?

The link on the article is near to the end and very subtle, keeping it non intrusive was intentional on my part, so that the content takes more importance than my personal targets related to app downloads.

Moreover the link goes to the niche site, which then leads to the call to action for the app download, which is a long process.

I still believe in the Pat Flynn approach, add more value than you expect back, it undoubtedly works for him, having said that, what's the best way to strike a balance?

Anyone any ideas, with the overall approach, and how to attract more users to the app from the blog.

Appreciate your thoughts on this, and thanks for your interest following my learning process.

Great post with awesome shares. Did you write it by yourself or did you outsource it?

The website needs some tweaking and design enhancement.

Good luck

@ossamaweb: thanks for checking out my post and site, and sharing your feedback.

I did write the post myself, glad you liked it. Objective of this excercise is to learn as many new skills as possible, so keeping it all in house at the monent, after all operating literally on $0 budget.

Yes, the website definitely needs more work, but wanted to make the content public without delay, as the material is useful and compliments the app, also helps to build organic traffic quickly.

Thanks once again, really appreciate your comments.
