Mobile apps - the END of LIST BUILDING ????
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

I would like to get some reality testing here.

Mobile apps are great. They reside in people's pockets. You can communicate by sending notifications. If you have an app that is downloaded and installed 50,000 times you can send notifications to 50,000 users.

Is this the beginning of the end of email lists???

No. One word: laggards.

Pretty much 100% of online users access their email accounts on a regular basis. A vast proportion, often the older demographic, won't be using apps. In all honesty, "the end is nigh for email lists" could have been said many times over: forums, Facebook, Twitter, and so on and so on. Is email the best way to communicate with your audience? I don't know about that. It's "a" way, and for now, the most common when trying to connect in a more direct manner than is afforded by, say, a Facebook page update.

The end will come when the majority of our audience communicate in a different manner.

Think of it this way. Would you accept several notifications per week? You would probably unsubscribe after the first notification. List building will not die.

Exactly, and the same with SMS marketing. App notifications and SMS marketing interrupts me. I set aside time to read my emails every day and therefore I see the email from the list builder when I decide to. Some people get notifications of emails, but that is the user's choice.

No, not really.

Email marketing will still be the top way of communicating with an audience.

since when did "list building" mean just an email list.

list building has been done by direct marketers for ever....long before al gore invented the internet for us to play with.

there are many types of lists and nuances that go along with curating each type of list, but list building wont die....ever. even once email is dead and gone, list building will still be alive and thriving.

Hey, great feedback. I really appreciate it. And have summarized it below:

* Email list building will be like radio as app notification would be like TV
* App notification have a younger audience while email is more diverse at this stage
* App notification is not suited for promotion at this stage but its best used to point them to app usage
* App notification, SMS notification and Email list are both considered list building

Anything I missed kindly add or update pls

No apps will not replace list building as it is too dependent upon the consumer to have your app downloaded whereas a text marketing or email marketing program doesn't require the customer to download anything onto their personal device.

It is a disadvantage if the app is too big for the consumer to download. But if it is an app that the consumer uses daily then it is an advantage.

I think it's probably done some sort of damage to email lists, but they're still effective and a way in which to reach out to a large and targeted audience at the press of a button.

The apps market is growing rapidly and shows no sign of slowing down, but I can't see it as any sort of replacement for email list building.

Mobile apps are great. They reside in people's pockets.
Applications are great IF they fill a real need, and a mobile app is great IF that need is one that really needs to be available anytime, anywhere, and at a moments notice. Otherwise... not so much so.

Take just a minute or two to reflect.

Just how many apps are currently available from either/both the Google App Store or the Apple Store?

Now look at your own phone. How many have you, yourself, downloaded?

Personally, I get notifications from 2 of my bank accounts, I have a weather app installed, and I have the Paypal app.

Of course... the phone came with an app to browse the Google App Store - but I DO NOT spend time window shopping for cool new apps to install. I don't go there, at all.

Now, I realize I might not be typical. That's why I suggested that you check your own phone.

You can communicate by sending notifications. If you have an app that is downloaded and installed 50,000 times you can send notifications to 50,000 users.
Apps and Notifications are no longer that new, so you've had plenty of time to decide on your own personal favorites and download them. How many Apps have you installed, and how many of them do you allow notifications from?

Is this the beginning of the end of email lists???
Having now analyzed your own use of mobile apps - why don't you tell us your conclusions?

Apps are distracting and I think many of their users are already blind for advertising on apps like they are blind for advertising banners on websites. Listbuilding and emails are still the way to go and you have their full attention IF you get them to open your mails.

Honestly I love email list building.

It gives people the freedom of opening my emails if they choose.

But with that said and done, most people will not give you there very best email. Sure some will but most won't.

I am sure some of you may have different experiences. But over the years, I have found that my email list is only about 50% responsive.

This doesn't mean that I get 50% open rates. Different emails on different days with different Subject Lines cause 'fluctuations' with open rates.

The average person has about 3 to 5 FREE Email Addresses that they use. The FREE ones are for FREE Offers and for opting into IM related stuff.

This means that most of the leads we generate can be 'unresponsive' because most of the email addresses aren't being monitored.

But what I have found is...If people really want to read your messages, they will regardless of email or SMS.

Future Trends: I believe we are headed to 'mobile' marketing sooner or later.

Right now people are not used to cell phone 'opt ins'. But they will.

C'mon dude! List Building would never die.. especially in this case. Would you like to open up your email account and read some silly notifications daily?

Email newsletters are meant to deliver quality and in-house information to your subscribers only! You can send them any content including information and promotions.

What you're talking abt app notifications, no one reads them the second time. Think hard buddy.

I really don't think the majority of people will buy network marketing related products from their phone anytime soon. So based upon people almost exclusively purchasing from their home computer/laptops, list building will continue to thrive for many many years to come. That is unless the government takes control of the Internet {conspiracy lol}

List building is still KING for me.

Still getting great results from it hands down.

Here's the thing........If something else does come along that can
really shake things up then I'm IN.

That quote was being spouted about years ago and still I see no
real challenger to list building as yet.

My observation so far is that the apps that I have are not utilizing mobile notifications in the way email lists are utilized. I have Duolinggo and it seems to stop notifying me to learn a new language. But last year it was like everyday with a tune.

Perhaps PicsArt seems to be closer to the game but I was trying to look for its notification today but could not find any.

Engagement... I think mobile apps lack engagement. People have very little attention span on a mobile device. But then again, why not keep all the channels open.

So far??? How long does it take to make that decision?

It was a simple question. Given the nature of your own personal use of phone apps, do YOU see them replacing an email list? Is there any app that you have downloaded, that has the potential for replacing the creator's need for an email list?

I personally don't see any benefit to watching a Wordpress tutorial (i.e. an example taken from your sig file) on my Android device. If I'm going to be installing a new WP site... I will be sitting in front of my laptop and if I need help, I can pull up a tutorial in another browser tab. That app for my phone is of no value simply because I would never use it.

The day will come but I don't think its coming anytime soon, email marketing is here to stay.

no, because:

- I always turn off notifications when install a new app/game, and I think a lot of people also do this

- Email marketing is FREE (or at least very very very cheap) to do, with app you'll need to promote a lot to get 50k+ installation

I just read that Facebook's revenue comes mostly from mobile - around 73%. So if I place an ad there for an app download vs. a one page site where I have to put my email, I wonder which will convert better.

I don´t think email will be replaced. Nothing is that black-white. But we will use it way less in coming years.

The use of email will be diminished by apps with a clearer, simpler and more interactive functionality. Think of Business focused apps such as Slack and HipChat that for me represent a consumerization of the business communications space - also with clients.

Interesting article AvidJon. It is comparing emails with social apps though. But having said this Duolinggo uses both notification and email to use their app on a weekly basis.

There has been no major innovation in the email arena for years. The problem of the small size of attachments resolved itself with emergence of the cloud apps like DropBox. Most emails still have the 25 Mb attachment limit. Managing multiple email accounts is a nuisance. There are apps like Inky that claim to handle all your emails in one spot, but don't work as promised. Spam is so bad that you need to clone yourself or hire a VA just to declutter your inbox. Disposable emails are used more and more. Also, folks don't want to give away their best email for yet another PLR ebook.

So I need help on list building. I don't know where to start...so I'm asking how did you start with a "list"? What all do you have to do.

No it is not the end of link building but it is what helps the people to search for their related website easily. Without link building its not easy to rank any website in Google and this is the reason most the business professionals still likes to do SEO for their website.

Mobile apps are very much powerful and helps the online businesses to reach their targeted audiences easily but it doesn't put an end to the link building strategies as it only makes the website visible in Google and assist to get huge traffic towards a website quickly.

How do you guys make push notification system for your apps? Do you use some services for it? I am creating my website and app, and I need some push for both. I am thinking of useng the Jeapie service for this. Have you tried it?
