Since an increasing percentage of consumers read content through mobile devices, proper loading and rendering are crucial. Since ad systems tend gunk up proper mobile rendering or lead to supposedly less than satisfactory reading experiences, the use of AD BLOCKERS are blowing up. This can lead to massive decreases in the revenues of ad-funded content sites. Case in point? NewYorkTimes.Com The workaround? Believe it or not, NATIVE ADS and (no surprises here) app-based closed environtment content systems like FB For the full details see Welcome to the Block Party - The Awl (not my site) Get ready for the AD BLOCKER APOCALYPSE ... don't say no one warned you WP-based ad block interceptors below are only a stop gap solution for WP-based bloggers. |

I need to admit that I use a adblocker now since 6 years (what a irony being in the affiliate marketing and & cpc stuff but using a adblocker by myself). But this is true, there are more and more people using adblockers. I can see it on my website traffic logging software, that most of my website visitors are using adblockers. But I don´t force them to disable it. Because if you force someone to disable such a plugin, they mostly tend to leave the site and never come back. Better to have someone using adblocker but being loyal to you and come after a while back to read new content on your website than somebody never comes back because he/she is forced to disable his plugin. |

I personally also use adblock but disable at most sites that I respect. Some webmasters have a text hidden under the ad kindly asking for support by disabling your adblocker. A work around would be to promote direct-content-related products that can actually be interesting/handy for the viewer (which is something that google adsense is not doing). |

Good point, Just as with all marketing strategies, what worked yesterday does not mean it will work today, never mind tomorrow. Adblockers are indeed exploding and it is just a matter of time before the majority will be blocking ads, I know I have for years as I was getting bombarded. Just like with fax blasts, email blasts, robo calls, text blasts, they all get hammered in time, and the time is up with adblockers exploding, so enjoy it while you can. Success to all, |

I agree with @Zoumhem. Forcing a user to disable Adblock is not a good idea as you will lose them as your reader forever. If you are focusing too much on your ads than your actual content then chances of you growing your blog is hard. Remember, if you develop dedicated readers, you can always pitch them a product, or start forum or work on other various stuffs. |

Unfortunately, those ads are what pays for all of the "free" internet that we have all come to expect. What happens when web publishers can no longer count on their revenue stream from ads??? Simple. They quit publishing!! What good is a "free" internet with NO content? Of course the really big players will find another way to get their ads viewed, but what about the smaller businesses that just don't have the money, staff, and/or political clout that the big guys have? Are we creating a monster, by even accepting ad blockers in the first place? I came across this article yesterday, and think it offers some good insight into the longer term impact that ad blockers are already having on the overall health of the web. Read it all the way through to get the whole picture. Welcome to hell: Apple vs. Google vs. Facebook and the slow death of the web | The Verge |

This issue wouldn't have exploded the way it did had ad servers properly shielded their technology from malware injections. It's a huge industry. They should have foreseen this kind of stuff and known better. Now even Apple is responding with their own ad blocker (of sorts -- it's actually just a blocker enabler). Work-around for advertisers: Hard-code ads into pages the way they were before the 3rd parties showed up and ruined everything with slow servers, outdated certificates, and God knows what else. |

When a page has that many trackers plus a ton of heavy graphic ads, I generally don't wait around. I'm gone. Take away my instant gratification because of a slow load and I'm outta there. I agree that content and loyal viewers who pass the word are the most important factor, just like on the street. If you provide the content your target market is looking for, it doesn't matter if they block popups and trackers, they will buy from you through emails and newsletters and ad pages (cyber-style infomercials). | |

If anything, this should push publishers to be PROACTIVE regarding their monetization models. Passive contextual/regular ads are not going to cut it. It's time to step it up a notch-turn the content itself into an ad. Go one step further and turn your BRAND into an ad. |
