I just launched a new product and have been starting up different ad campaigns and whatnot. When setting up a campaign in Adwords, you have the choice of manually selecting which devices you'd like your ads to run on... one of the options being "Mobile devices with full browsers". I'm just curious as to how well these ads convert when viewed on a mobile phone such as an iPhone.

I'm advertising a golf product, and (perhaps naively) I'm having a hard time believing that those belonging to the typical golf demographic would end up actually purchasing the product all on their phones. I suppose I'm speaking more towards the older golfers.

Perhaps most of the value from these mobile ads comes from the marketing of the product/brand itself, which could in turn lead to more sales through the regular (non-mobile) website?

I don't have hard data but personally I would guess that people would shy away from buying more expensive items on a phone vs cheaper things. Just because it is a bigger decision and would be smart to compare prices on different tabs, look at pictures, etc whereas cheaper items wouldn't matter as much?

Ive heard horror stories where people were making pennies off ad mob. I could only imagine how it is on the other side. The japanase mobile market is killing it with buyers. Seems as though the rest of the world isn't catching up fast enough.

Heres an idea instead of advertising on other peoples apps how about creating your own? The app could be a mini squeeze page with something free for golfers. "Free book shows 5 important tip every golfer should know!"

You're absolutely correct Vince...Here's what I did in running a small test campaign on Admob, rather than trying to sell directly off the mobile page which still has it's 'early days' teething problems in exection and consumer trust, specially with large ticket items, I decided to run mobile squeeaze pages hooked up to my aweber account offering a free video. I ran 3 $50 campaigns and got over 100 sign ups to the list which isnt bad in my opinion.

A lot will depend on the quality of the offer and the squeeze page itself plus getting as creative as possible in the limited amount of text available in the ad itself...I wouldnt bother with paying extra for the image ads until you start seeing some decent results.

Hi Vince,
Making pennies of Admob happens if you don't research your market. It's actually the same with normal KW and niche research, right?

To research your niche properly go to the KW tool Adwords and and type in your (general) KW. Under advanced options choose from the dropdown menu, all mobile devices. This will give you an insight on the traffic of those KW's.
Now, be aware that results of Admob can vary a bit, but without doing KW research for mobile devices you won't get anywhere.
What I normally do is pick 2 or 3 keywords off Google and split test those with low amounts. In Admob the minimum campaign bid is $10, so if you have 2 ads of those KW's running in that campaign, you won't loose out that much!
I always use image ads. Yes, these are more expensive but with a split test campaign of only 10 bucks, you'll get a general idea.

Now, in regards to your niche, I can imagine that golfing in general comes down to the "older" generation, so you might focus on the squeeze page first to capture some leads.
