2 Questions about Video on Mobile Sites
Share on:

So, if I want to use a .3gp file, what code do I use to imbed it? I have a few short clips that I really don't want up on Youtube, but I can't figure out how to code them for my mobile site.

Second question...... is there an "alt" capability for video, in case someone can't bring the clip up on their phone? These clips are of discount offers, and I'd like them listed where the video would be if, for some reason, a person can't bring up the video. Thanks.

As of the end of December, a video player is available which recognizes mobile devices and will play your self-hosted .3gp video files. It is available as a plugin for WP sites and as a standalone for HTML sites. It's the newest version of Mark Dulisse's The Traffic Player. Have a look at Live | The Traffic Player. Note that it appears to have been designed to allow non-mobile-optimized sites (desktop sites) to recognize mobile devices and feed them your .3gp self-hosted video instead of your .mp4 self-hosted video. (The developer's assumption seems to be that the desktop sites do not have accompanying mobile-optimized sites and redirects to these sites. I'm not clear whether it is also designed to be installed on mobile-optimized sites as well and haven't received a satisfactory answer from the developer. I'm similarly unclear by what method The Traffic Player Mobile detects mobile devices. I've asked a respected Warrior expert to look into these issues.

as far as i am aware you dont embed the file within the page you link to it as you would with a regular <a href> tag

the reason being is that most phones will support 3gp by default - additionally from my tests i have phone that devices i have tested on that they also progressively download and stream the video at the same time, meaning that you can watch the video as it downloads.

Previously i had issues streaming and downloading at the same time with android 2.2 and later.

hth

PS

After testing for hours and hours a ton of different video converters i found that the ONLY .3gp converter that worked across all the devices i tested it on was created using Quick Time Pro.

Quick Time Pro for the price i think is a great little tool for mobile video and 100% recommend it for generating 3gp video!

Cheers,

Jay
