How do most SMS subscribers sign up?

To those that offer SMS marketing for small businesses. I was wondering how most subscribers sign up. Through a sign-up sheet at the business or opt-ins?

Typically it will be by texting to opt-in. Text WHATEVA to 12395. That kind of ordeal.The only problem is that people will intend to do it later and forget. People are lazy..

But, you may increase opt-ins by having them just put their number down on a sheet of paper in order to opt-in. Although, if you have a call to action (text/subscribe and get a free drink right now!) you won't have to worry about people not opting in right then via text.
