Local Mobile Marketing List

Hey all, this idea is sort of like the motel's idea mentioned in this forum.

I've decided to setup a local mobile marketing list with SMS campaigns included in my town. I've got a good domain name, .mobi, and will create a local business directory.

Then, I'll search on Google Places for coupons already existing, and will place them on my website as well as setup a SMS campaign with COUPONS as the keyword.

I'll be putting up flyers and posters in schools to advertise about my mobile website with a SMS opt-in. To my list, I'll be sending out one coupon each day from the collection of my coupons found on the net.

Additionally, when I reach a high number of subscribers, I'll approach motels and other public venues and propose them a free permanent mobile website, plus a top 5 permanent listing in the mobile directory in their category, with one free trial of a SMS campaign. The SMS campaign will include one text per week for one whole month. If they like the service after one month, they'll need to pay to continue. In return, I'll ask for a permanent advertising spot (QR Code will be integrated.)

For now, the monetizing effect hasn't taken place. I was thinking of setting up a network of clients purchasing their daily coupon spot on the mobile website and on the SMS text. As time will go on and my network will increase, I'll be getting checks every day. I might also increase the daily limit to 2 coupons. In the long term, if my list is composed of 10,000s persons--which is very doable in my town as I'll be targeting the most crowded area, with a facebook fanpage for viral marketing and spread word of mouth--and if I'll be sending two coupons each day, for $0.05 a text, it's 1000$ per day, which is 365k per year. Not too bad for one marketing campaign?

Also, for the free trials that I'll be giving out, there will be a huge return on investment for the business owners, and I'll be setting up subgroups for keywords to target specific people (for example in colleges the keyword will be STUDENT, in motels it'll be MOTEL, in pizza places it'll be PIZZA, you get my drift.) To send texts to specific targeted groups, the text's cost will increase to maybe $0.06 or more. As they'll see positive returns, they will most likely re-buy my services, and thus I get a client.

The possibility of giving a discount instead of a trial is possible too, since already building them a mobile website and giving a top tier spot in my directory is a huge plus for them.

I then thought that the daily aspect of the campaign will hurt me in the long run, but I've gave some more thoughts and came up with a way of controlling it. Clients are only going to be able to purchase one day at a time. A queue system will be implanted. This will give a "luxury" impression.

A large list in the coupons niche with social networking sounds to me like jackpot (Groupon reference.)

Any comments or input? I'll be removing this post soon; however, I'll post back updates when I'll be seeing results.

P.S. I might create another website designed only for "nightlife". The SMS campaign will be composed of hot nightlife events in [city] with a telephone number in the text to call to make a guestlist (call to action.) This will use the same system as the one above and I'll be contacting directly nightclubs about this service, and will charge a fee per each text sent. Furthermore, with this model, up-selling will be easy. I'll also be offering my personal consultant services to nightclub owners and my services will range from building a mobile website to managing their own sms marketing campaign with their own keywords.

P.S.S. Under each page, I'll be putting "Powered by [MyCompanyName]" which might create more potential clients to my consulting business.

Gotta say, I love the idea man.

Makes me think about trying out something similar as well. One thing you could also do is maybe extend it to an iPhone/Android app as well in order to:

1. Get more opportunities to sell advertising
2. Get yet another way to reach your market
3. Expand offer a little more; i.e. have one for the text and one for the app
each day.
4. Messaging people in apps is not as annoying as text messages might become
after a while.

Just my two cents on the subject. Can't wait to hear how it worked out!

lirikh,
I especially like the part of your plan re. the nightlife segment. Last year a young friend of mine built a Facebook Fan Page with a list of over 1000 fans that was centered around the bar scene in our town. By sending out just one message he could fill any bar in town!
The only problem I see is over saturation. People that get too many texts will soon start to opt out.
Best wishes,
Jim

The granting of a discount instead of the research is also possible, since they are already building a mobile site and provides top-level directory in my place is a great advantage for them.
