Sold my first 2 Mobile Websites this afternoon!
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

hi there,

I just want to share with you guys. I sold my first 2 mobile websites to a restaurant (2 different locations) this afternoon.

Last week, I went to my favorite restaurant, and I received their money mailer coupons all the time. So I talked to the manager about his marketing campaigns. Then I mentioned sms marketing and mobile site. He wasn't interested in sms at all, but he showed interested in mobile site. Anyway, after long talk, I told him that I could make a demo site for him, and he said ok.

And this afternoon, I went to show him the demo, he likes it, he wants a mobile site for another location if I can give him a deal and he can trade part of fees. So I accepted his offer.

I know some of you probably don't do trade. But I just want to get my business a START. I have been doing cold calling and direct mails. However, no responds so far. I really need something to cheer me up!!

Now I am all motivated, I can't wait to approach more business!!

That's excellent, it really is. Congrats!

Nothing beats being able to go in and SHOW the business owner exactly what you are talking about. It's very hard to do that over the phone or email. It's not impossible but it is harder, as you've found out first hand.

You've now proven to yourself that it can be done. Sometimes that's all it takes to really fire you up and get things going. It's just a numbers game from here on in. Make sure you start creating a portfolio of the sites you create so you can approach other businesses in the area and use the fact that their competition is already mobile to your advantage.

Nice way to start the weekend!

Awesome work, and really encouraging!
I have been thinking lately....I bet it's not so much a well worded super script from some guru that's really going to make it happen....it's just being yourself, and having a product that will genuinely be something they want......

Yeah congrats on implementing a strategy and the patience that it takes to get something rolling!

Trade can be a great currency. I just did some keyword research for one of my General Contractor clients who wants to branch out in exchange for some deperately needed plumbing work on the house. Everybody happy.

I agree with Will - compile a portfolio
... and testimonials...

A great time to ask for a testimonial is when they are approving the tweaks you make to their "customized" site. I give them a form survey and ask them to write what they like best (along with a few other questions relevant to their business), like - Which of the following advertsiing media will you use to promote your new mobile presence: TV? Radio? Magazines? Newspapers? Flyers? Billboards? Internet? Other?

This also enforced the concept that they still need to promote - which keeps the SMS door open for an add-on sale in the future.

Congrats again!

Well done on taking action. I think a lot of us are guilty of going to such a place and never talking to the manager about their marketing. I guess you don't switch off

Thanks all. My next plan is to talk to Hotels and build a mobile web with QR code for their "Recommendation Restaurant List" for free. Then I will use the list as a lead and tried to sell them mobile website, so they can link their mobile website to the "List". But this time I will try to charge them monthly plus set up fees instead. I think it is easier to sell.

The restaurant I sold 2 mobile sites, the manager kept telling me that he can pay $299 for Money Mailer which deliver over 10,000 households, it is very difficult for him to justify that invest the same amount of $$ on the mobile site, but because I am willing to trade and give him a deal, that's why he bought the mobile sites.

Congrats, I owe 70% of my sales to 1 page demo sites I create for a prospect. I use Will's & Quentin's template, I bought both the courses and found great value.

Hey NameThatCandy Congrats,
Try this next time you get that objection about the money mailer: Say "that's great you get a good response from Money Mailer. How many coupons do you get back? (Whatever he says it's going to be fairly low number, Repeat it.) You get about 35 back? Oh - what is the offer you run? That's a nice offer and you get around 35 back every month. Would you like to run that offer on your mobile site and make it available to the 327,523 people in our area with smartphones? And once you have your mobile site, it won't cost you a dime to run this offer every day or do you want it to run only during the week? (alternate advance) You've done two things - contrasted the 35 people that return the coupon with the number of people with smart phones. Also, you've gained some valuable info and you've attempted to close. Good luck.

Awesome! I have a friend in Ireland and he started offering Mobile websites to local businesses in his area early this year. I sold him a copy of my mobile website creator. My team developed the creator for my growing clients by popular demand. I have been involved in the outsourcing business for 3 years and the requirements for mobile websites and pages are staggering.

The silly thing is a big proportion of people who actually visited his website after reading the mailer would probably be doing so on some type of mobile device.

Hows this for a stat to help back up that argument...

"Many mobile Web users are mobile-only, i.e. they do not, or very rarely use a desktop, laptop or tablet to access the Web. Even in the US 25 percent of mobile Web users are mobile-only."

Source: blog | On Device Research

93% of people surveyed use their smart phone whilst at home.

Source: http://www.gstatic.com/ads/research/...leMovement.pdf

It makes me laugh sometimes. This guy is wasting a lot of that $299 if his website is not optimized for a smartphone. If it were me I would have asked him what response rate he usually gets from the mailer. He would have said... "I'm not sure but it's usually quite good."... meaning he has NO clue at all.

I would then say, great, let's set up another mailer and this time we will install Google Analytics and create a unique page/offer on your website just for this promotion. We will then check the stats after a week and see how many people you are ACTUALLY getting to your website as a result of that mailer. If using Google Analytics we can then also show them exactly how many of those visitors were on mobile devices.

Advertising is useless unless you track it. This guy probably keeps throwing $299 at these mailers thinking they are doing him some good but the truth is, he wouldn't have a clue.

That's Excellent. The hardest sale is always the first one and now you're full of confidence to go out and duplicate your efforts

What was the price in the end for your mobile site to this customer?

Also like to back up whats already said here that Quentin's and Will's scripts are the best and so much step by step training to go with them too

All the best

Hey WillR that's some good info, but the guy has a restaurant. He doesn't give a flip about his website, unless it is bringing people in the door or making his takeout order phone ring.

Hi there,

thanks everyone!

@Steve, I end up charge him $500 for both sites ($49 off each site). Half trade and half cash. I eat there almost every week, so I don't mind to trade. And I use Will's scripts which I really love, and it is easy and he is always there to help if I have any questions.

@Will and Wild, thanks for the advice, when he told me about Money Mailer, and he claimed that he got good result, my brain went blank. I didn't really what to say!! But after all your advice, at least I see him next time, I know what to tell him.

Next time you can say one can't know how many people out of the 10,000 households are going to actually look at and use their advertisement. There is absolutely no way to measure that. With text messages, you can rest assured that a large percentage of your audience will actually read the message.

Work on your rebuttals, have them prepared and ready to use at moment's notice.

Hey WillR - I was referring to you saying that the people that were going to his website from Money Mailer were on a smartphone. Money Mailer is a coupon service. The offer the restaurant has in there is probably not related to his website. (I thought you misunderstood what the Money Mailer is) He probably gets a lot of coupons in from it. Those mailers can be pretty effective for local businesses.

So here's what you do: Have the owner put a QR Code in the money mailer and put some text under it like, "Special coupon for mobile phone users only. Scan Now!".
Have it link to a special coupon on the mobile website that a user can bring in to the restaurant. If nothing else, the curiosity of the QR Code would get people to "act on something", which is the whole point of marketing!

Thanks everyone! It took me a while to get started. I am kind of shy to talk to strangers, but I am glad I did. Otherwise, I will never make any sales.

@tomzuck, I tried to sell him sms, but he is very very hated the ideas of sms, he said it will ignore the customers, even though I explained clearly about we send out 2 texts max, and the customers signed up for the list are expecting that coupon texts. I gave up on him!!

@JToneyUK, it is hard to get started. But glad that you finally did!! Good luck!

Spotted this timely article yesterday on all the ways merchants can issue coupons via mobile marketing. Coupons and MM are a natural marriage and the expected growth boom is staggering.

That's awesome! Mobile marketing is definitely the way to go in this day and age. Of course, you can always stick to IM, that won't dissapear, but mobile marketing I believe is the next boom in this generation. Again, congrats on selling the sites!

Great job. Restaurants and bars are foolish not to have a mobile website. Their patrons are on their phones waiting for their food. They need to know that they can easily access the menu or make a call the next time they are thinking of visiting. Standard web on a phone is a pain and a reason to surf elsewhere.

Thanks everyone.

My hubby called some hotels for the FREE websites, but no one answered the phones, he left messages, no one call back. Probably we will just walk in to the hotels next week.

I will try to contact more business after I finished the websites. It is almost done, just wait for the restaurant managers for approval.

Will keep you guys update!

Good for you! That's all you need. You see the interest and then push forward. I actually approached a local company I knew and asked if they needed a mobile website built and surprisingly they were right on it! They said yes instantly! By just having the courage, you can accomplish almost anything. Keep on it. You're doing great!

Coupon use and redemption can definitely be measured and tracked. What the business owner should be doing is getting customers who redeem them on some type of list (preferably SMS) so they can be marketed to over and over again.

And remember it doesn't need to be one or the other. Mobile can exist with other forms of marketing. In fact mobile and web marketing should be used to enhance the effectiveness of other forms of marketing.

A bit late to the party - but congratulations on the sales :-) I'm going self employed next year - have given my notice after 16 years of working for the same company and I can't wait - mobile sites are going to be a significant part in my business. The interest I have generated so far is most encouraging - keep us up to date with your future sales ;-)
