What is the best option for hosting multiple videos long term ?
Share on:

Im working on an idea that clients would give me videos/content and I would upload them to ....?

I can't just upload them to youtube because I must have control over the videos. They need to be accessible for a long time...over 30 years at least.

Should I just get a reseller account and host them there ?

Should I be concerned about capacity ?

Yes. You can never be sure if and when a video site will cancel your account for no good reason.

We have hostgator and run a stock footage site. They have unlimited storage so I can put on as much as I want. Of course, you never know what will happen with them or ANY other host, so a guaranteed 30 years is almost an impossibility!

Good luck!

I would never host videos on your web hosting since they will put an unnecessary strain on your server and slow everything down. You have two options. Use a free service like Youtube or host the videos yourself using a 3rd party service like Amazon S3. I use Amazon S3 to host all my videos, images, etc. It's dirt cheap, fast, and won't put any strain on your web server at all.

I too use Hostgator to host my websites and love them. Just be careful though since unlimited does not really mean that. There is a point where you can have too much data and they will ask you to upgrade or move to another plan. Unlimited doesn't mean unlimited in the general sense of the word. Other people on this forum have run into the same problem where they thought they were on an unlimited plan but eventually used up too many resources and Hostgator asked them to change to a dedicated server - which even then has a maximum capacity.

This isn't just a 'problem' with Hostgator. You will find most web hosting companies that offer 'unlimited 'hosting will have limitations in place.

hmm, I don't know anything about AmazonS3. I will check into it. I feel like I should be in charge of how long (within reason) the videos are available. I think if I told them I will just create a youtube channel they might look at me funny. Now the best choice would be for them to host the videos themselves BUT then that would kind of devalue my services. And what I plan on doing for them, they can easily have a staff member figure out.

I have had a few video sites, I am down to one currently but you will need a good ffmpeg host,,, there are a few fairly good ones around, I use pacifichost.com ,, the providers have optimized their servers to handle streaming as if they are viewed a lot at one time on a normal host they will start to either load slow, pixelate or stop action.. and the normal web hosts will more than likely suspend your account for abuse..

The other great thing about using external storage services such as Amazon S3 is if you need to or decide to move hosts for whatever reason, you don't have to transfer all that data. If you wanted to move your current hosting you would have to transfer that whole 50GB worth of data over to the new host. Could be a nightmare.
