If you Host Mobile Website how do you use m.domain.com???
Share on:

Hello All,
I was wondering for those who are giving away mobile websites for free and charging a monthly hosting and maintenence fee how much do you charge them per month. I was thinking $9.95 -$14.95 or so since the sites I have targeted won't have much maintenence if any as they are simple info sites.

Also if you are hosting the sites yourself then I guess you cannot use the popular m.domain.com to host them. so what are you doing? are you using samedomain.mobi for this and a redirection script on the homepage of the main site?

Thanks

You need to direct the DNS of m.website.com to your server while leaving their main website dns directed towards their server.

I have not done it myself so can not walk you through it but you should see options in your host and their domain register to set it up.

I'd recommend to charge $10 more on first installment and buy the .mobi for them. It would look more professional to the client and would be easier to set up from the DNS viewpoint.

Two ways to look at it.

1) Redirect the subdomain "m" to your own subdir
2) Get the .mobi

Either way requires the redirect script.

I like #2 because it has been shown (though not conclusively) that .mobi ranks better.

Thanks for the input but I don't get how you can set nameservers to point to a subdomain on your hosting. How would you do this with godaddy? If the business you target already has hosting for their regular website how do you redirect a subdomain to your hosting where you would host their mobile site. They already have their nameservers pointing to their hosting. So how would this be done???

I understand buying the .mobi and having the nameservers point to your hosting where you will put the mobile site. But I don't see how to point the nameservers to a subdomain like m.domain.com that you would host if they already have their nameservers pointing to domain.com on their hosting?

Mike,

I understand your confusion. You don't actually want to point their nameservers to your domain... as you correctly said that will just mess things up and their standard website will be gone.

What you want to do is create what's know as a cname record. A cname record is one you setup that points your subdomain to another domain name (e.g. m.domain.com -> domain.com). So you can setup a cname record on your customers subdomain (m.website.com) and have that cname pointed to the domain you are hosting their mobile site on.

A lot of hosting companies will not allow you access to setup these cname records yourself - it's usually something you will just need to contact support to have setup. You would just contact their hosting support and say you want to setup a cname record for subdomain x and point it to this domain. They will then do it for you and it takes usually about 4-8 hours to propagate so it won't be immediate - you need to give it a little time to work.

A real life example of this was one I setup on my own domain. I use Amazon S3 to host a lot of my content such as images and videos. I setup a cname record on my domain that pointed to my bucket on Amazon S3. So to a visitor they may have seen the image location as cdn.mywebsite.com/images/photo.jpg but that image was in fact hosted on the Amazon S3 server and was just being served through the cname record. The 'cdn' subdomain just stands for content delivery network but you can have that subdomain be anything you want... that's just what I chose to name it.

I hope that makes some sort of sense?

Thanks Will. That sounds like a lot. I think I will go with the .mobi if I am going to host the sites so I can control the domain and hosting.

I bought your mobile template not too long ago and just got the new templates which are great. Anyway with the first template I made 60 mobile sites for local businesses. They all have a regular website and are on page one of google so therefore I figure they need a mobile site more than anyone.

I initially tried to sell them for $497 by email and got zero conversions with the 60 local businesses. Then I tried $397 by email and still no conversions. I tried cold walk ins next and got 2 conversions out of 8. Haven't tried cold calls yet. So I figure if I try giving the mobile sites away for free It will be a lot easier getting customers. I'll make less initially but more in the long run.

I just did that with godaddy,
go to the DNS panel, select your domain and add a new A or Cname record, I heard A record is better. Wait 4 hours or more, with a .m sub directory don't forget to take away the www and add m. to look for it on the internet.
Oh and of course your server must be set up properly to handle the new subdomain, that's another topic, but typically some hosting providers will let you do that, I also use Amazon apache server so it gets tricky.

I heard mobi is not that important,
