You will need a few design skills to achieve this. You can see some examples of what's possible with QR code designs in this thread:

In regards to customizing the codes I'm not aware of any tutorials however there is one guy on this forum who offers pretty cool customized QR code design so that's an option:

you need to take advantage of the QR codes highest error correction setting which permits a 30% error correction...

What that means is if 30% of the QR code if removed or altered it should work - whilst that's a great ideal i would actually target 25% or less of the code... you will notice that whilst you can modify the main alignment points (the bigger square dots) i would avoid removing them in their entirety!

The links that Willr pointed out will give you a good idea of the direction you can go with your design but its imperative you test and test again that your QR code scans well, not all QR code scanner apps work the same - whilst one apps scans a custom QR code without issue i have had others that wont. You also need to keep your colors contrasting - in particular have a lighter background than the foreground color.

You can actually do this online with certain sites but for best results i would recommend using either Adobe illustrator or photoshop.

Whatever you do with your QR code just please make sure it goes to something that is actually mobile friendly and worthy of an actual scan!

few more examples here on WF:

Sorry, I am too busy helping people to think of a cool signature!

Have you tried it with Gimp Jay? Or, is anyone else doing this with Gimp or a similar tool?

Hi kelvintang

You can add images/text in the QR codes by using Photoshop/Gimp.

But, first you have to generate the QR code using the highest level of error correction setting. There are four option for it: L, M, Q, H. Choose the H option, as it gives you error correction with 30% maximum loss.

Using Photoshop/Gimp, you can remove some parts of the QR codes, except the three big squares. Then you can append your image/text in the QR codes. Make sure that the image/text is not too big in size, as the best error correction in QR code can only cover maximum of 30% loss/deformation.

CMIIW. Thank you.

Take a look at my example here: http://www.warriorforum.com/mobile-m...nnotation.html

I had posted a short tutorial video on how to create a custom QR code:
http://www.youtube.com/pijnz#p/a/u/0/rObFZ3aRPoQ

(shows how to change the color, add background graphics, and add the rounded edges for a milder look). You need to have Photoshop though. If you don't have Photoshop, find any offshore designer on eLance and send them the link to the above video : )

You can add any background graphic, just be careful with the colors - the background graphic colors cannot be the same or similar to the colors used in the QR code. (That confuses the QR reader as it can't detect the QR code borders).

And as Jay is saying, QR codes are quite forgiving and allow up to 30% of error correction (just make sure you test it with your reader before submitting to print!).
