Any suggestions for how to display a menu on a mobile website? Do I type it all out? would a pdf work? Thanks.

I would steer away from a PDF on a mobile phone because it will require a download and they will be right back into the same issues dealt with as they would be on a Desktop Version of the site.

You would be much better off actually typing it out, even if it is more work

I would honestly break down the menu into individual pages. A little more work upfront, but it would result in much faster viewing for the end-user. Plus, they won't have to do the "pinch/expand" stuff to read the PDF.

I agree, PDF's suck on mobile. Do tabs for each section, appetizers, salads, etc.. It's more work but it will be a better experience for the user.

What I also did recently was link a food item to an actual picture of the dish. Then a simple "back to menu" link to return to the exact spot on the menu when the person was finished viewing the food dish. I didn't do all the items on the menu, but did do a higher ratio when it came to the dessert menu. Again, more work, but more value as well!

Guess that would vary depending on the size of the restaurants menu. If its a simple family style restaurant with a limited menu then that makes sense, but if their physical menu is 7 to 10 pages long that could get pretty time consuming!
