Responsive Themes for Mobile
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Hi,

I see a lot of so called responsive html 5 and wordpress themes lately being offered, and they have great promise.

Anybody build sites using these yet ? And how responsive are they really...on iphones, tablets and smartphones..

And yes i know they are not the same as full mobile sites but when we could use these for building sites for clients that would be a nice touch and they will look better on tablets than ordinary mobile sites.

Charles..

Check out simplethemes skeleton responsive and there is another one called constellation. There are a few more that are really good soundly built responsive themes.

Roark | Internet Marketing & Design Consultant is built on skeleton. Check it out on computer and smartphone.

It's just a simple layout but if you know css you can do a lot. I prefer minimal design.

I use a responsive mobile and tablet theme.

Check it out here: Animated Website Videos & Video Explainers at Web Video for Business |

I think it works pretty well! I'm happy

be sure you understand the difference between responsive design and mobile optimized designed websites - whilst responsive design is pretty cool you still need to consider file size and performance. Responsive design basically hides and moves things around and scales content to suit the screensize - this means that large images and hidden elements still get loaded in the background.

Optimized mobile sites are strictly built to be handled on mobile devices - for me they will always be more lightweight and have better performance over a responsive design additionally a responsive design will never validate as well as a mobile optimized website thats been developed properly.

Personally if your really serious about mobile you would go with optimized over responsive in particular if you can see the bigger picture when it comes to Google and mobile seo.

End of the day each to their own and use whatever you think is best!

Sorry, I am too busy helping people to think of a cool signature!

Considering their themes are based on EXACT phone models I would probably stay well clear of them. ONE theme should be able to handle majority of those phone models.

Hello! There's lots of sites for this kind of services. You just gotta search for them. But yeah, Wordpress has mobile themes. Though, I haven't tried it yet, I just saw the ad. Anyways, I hope that helped you in a way or so. Best of luck!

Re: Responsive Themes for Mobile

While this is mostly an older thread, I absolutely prefer responsive themes.

And I rank nice and high in the search engines (esp. mobile searches too) with my responsive theme for my clients .

I HATE redirects to "mobile sites" - because they usually don't detect properly (at least many I've found), or they miss a LOT of important info. (The days of "home / About / Contact" aren't really acceptable anymore as the only thing on a site - even mobile in my opinion and that of others I've read).

A person searching for info on a mobile device WANTS info - yes, a call to action/ tap to call, but also info on the company.

A responsive theme, *when used properly* contains everything from the regular site, just formatted for mobile or tablet screens. No information lost.

Yes, it loads images etc. however, if they're optimized to begin with (which they should be), it's a non issue.

And if the site contains flash, well then that's just not paying attention to the mobile segment, and the responsive theme isn't practical anyway.

Depending on the theme, the good ones optimize the output of images etc., so that they still load quickly.

Just my experience.

I read just this past week (can't remember if it was on forbes, I'm thinking, but might have been street fight) - this very similar conversation. A mobile site should not be really different than the regular site. It just needs to work to fit the mobile device without making someone stretch the content in order to see it (not truly responsive).

Jay is spot on. Be careful with responsive as some developers claim their themes but in fact are bloated down with un-needed junk that will never validate well according to industry standards. IMO a website optimized for mobile is always the best option.

Not sure if KCNL still needs for a mobile theme, but recently we developed an icon-based Wordpress mobile template that's responsive up to iPad size - see how it works here.

You may not need a site to show up on an iPad or tablet but I agree with Will that any mobile platform should allow the website to show up well on a variety of screen sizes not tied to any specific model. This is going to be important as the average smartphone screen gets larger on the new models.

If you're going to create some responsive sites, I'd suggest to have a look at Premium WordPress Themes, Web Templates, Mobile Themes | ThemeForest and search for "responsive". Best is to order at "sales" or "rating" to get the best ones on top. They really have some "diamonds" there!

Hi Amber,

Can you recommend any Responsive WP themes you have used. I like using responsive themes but its hard to keep up with all the themes coming out.

Thanks,
Matthew

I'd be interested in knowing as well from the "experienced web folks" which exact responsive themes you are using and liking.
