Hosting Mobile Websites For New Clients - What Do Your Clients Prefer?
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Hi Everyone,

When setting up a mobile website for new clients who already have a desktop website that was designed by someone else, which hosting method do your new clients usually prefer?

1. Installed in Sub-Domain of their desktop site (i.e. m.myclientsdomain.com)

2. Installed in Sub-Folder of their desktop site (i.e.myclientsdomain.com/m)

3. Installed on New Mobile Domain (i.e. myclientsdomain.mobi)

4. Installed in Sub-Domain on Domain You Own (i.e. clientbusiness.yourdomain.com)

5. Installed in Sub-Folder on Domain You Own (i.e. yourdomain.com/clientbusiness)

Thanks
Q-Man

Q-Man,

1 and 2 works w/mobi redirect script. No problem.
But I'm in at 'cross road' because I have several .mobi domains...and so far I don't see the reason to keep them..Since renewing is like $18/ domain + hosting is more expensive .mobi , just don't see to hang on to them.
What're you think?

in my experience, it's not how they like but what/how is easier to manage.
I have clients that I've done their sites, I host it so no brainer I put it in a subdomain like m.clientbusiness.com, I never get a .mobi for them or they never ask me because they will have to pay extra fees (.mbi reg) and sometime it's already taken by domainers (parking page with for sale sign).

Now I have a few clients that already have a .com or .ccTLD site done by one of my competitor and I don't have access to hosting or don't want them to call my competitor and ask for ftp access (they would say NO, also say we can do it) so better host by my own on yourdomain.com/clientbusiness with a redirect, I don't add subdomain here for the good reason that I don't want to waste time on seting up sub and it's my domain name not my client one.

The one I use majority of the times is the m. subdomain on their current domain. It just seems to make the most sense to me.

As what the others would say....

"Different Folks...Different Strokes..." You will never have two clients having the same thoughts and ideas on how they will deal with their own marketing strategies...One must have a real honest to goodness guidance until they realize that there are better ways to achieve their goals.

Its not what they want really -- its what you are going to tell them that will deliver.

Mary...

I also use the m.subdomain.com. And the reason is because that's what I would want for myself and is what I use for my sites. Even if I had to contact a competitor (haven't had to yet), I don't start any work until the client accepts my contract so they wouldn't be able to back out.

I'm glad to see WillR and Lint631 response as this will help me overcome any apprehension in standing firm with potential clients.

It really depends on the reason for the Mobile Website and there is no definitive answer.

For example I have done 10 mobile websites this week and 4 were happy for me to host as they were linked to QR Codes and did not need the site to be visible to their normal site. They go in a generic site in a folder.

2 were added to their own hosting and I just sent the files to the owner as I hate touching other peoples hosting as there are so many different types and have got burnt in the past. You may not stuff it up but if something happens they will blame you.

2 were on their hosting that I manage and we added it to m.domain.com

1 was for one of our wholesalers and we added them to a site we created for them and they go in a folder with QR Code linking.

1 is a big product site which we hosted and bought a .mobi domain for. It is just going in the root of the hosting using wordpress.

So if you only have one business model then use any system you like but we have a broad customer base so we have to use different strategies for different clients

Quentin,

How about redirect codes? Do you upload those up for your clients on their website?

The ones we create that are for an alternative mobile website to their desktop site yes we add redirect script however the high percentage are linked to a QR Code for specific promotions etc so no need for redirection.

So for example this is a coupon code we change monthly for a customer so no need for redirection as they want stats on in store QR Code scanning.

I think Quentin has some great points. Each client is different and has different needs.

BTW: Quentin love the simplicty of that coupon site.

depends on the scenario - and how much access we have to the clients hosting, we always try and host the site ourselves - recently we have been doing full site rebuilds as well so we tend to host everything

since we use our own wordpress based mobile framework we dont have to use any subdomain or mobile folder since the desktop and mobile sites are integrated... in theory you could point the m. subdomain to the main site if you really wanted to have a m. subdomain...

if we are hosting it and the main site and do have to separate them we would put the site in a /m subfolder and point the subdomain to it... thats typically how cpanel configures subdomains anyway...

theres actually many different ways to do it - and as a few of the other guys have said on here already there really isnt a one solution fits all...

one thing we do take into consideration too is we also look at how easy their current domain is to enter in a phone - if its too long or complex we will also use a .mobi domain

Sorry, I am too busy helping people to think of a cool signature!
