Do you really Think Mobile Marketing is the best Next "Big Thing"??

You bet it will be.
Mobile Marketing is the future, people don't use PC Desktops anymore.

I work in the Wireless Industry for one of the Largest Mobile Carriers across the nation and according to last survey 79% of the people would rather to watch videos and Search the Web right from teir Phone than to be stick to a monitor for a couple of hours.

I guess that Wireless Technology Nowadays is so convienience and porwerful that you don't need Computers anymore.

I think mobile will eventually be the norm, but speeds are still not what a desktop PC can deliver. I have 3G on my android and the speed gets a little annoying most of the time. Kind of like where internet on a desktop was in 1999 with dialup. Couple more years though and I could see most everyone doing most of their surfing on their mobile devices.

Selling mobile sites also seems to be as tough as selling regular websites in the 1990s. Many business owners don't really see a need to have one. A business wouldn't think about not having a normal website today, but they rarely think of a mobile site. That will change over the next few years. We on the WF are always ahead of the curve!

Keep in mind the number of people accessing the internet via a mobile device will outnumber the number of people doing so via Desktop by 2014...

Also, 4G exceeds the speed of DSL and 3G is soon going by the wayside.

As with any other technology, there will always be early adopters and there will be those who have to play catch up down the road.

I can tell you from personal experience, businesses who have a budget for advertising have no problems being right in the thick of the "what's happening now." I get that most still don't feel the need to have a mobile site, but once you show them the numbers of where they are leaving money on the table it becomes a no brainer. I don't go after franchised million dollar businesses, but I don't try and sell mobile services to a business barely making ends meet either.

Mobile has never been a real hard sell for me, I believe it will only get easier!

That's right. I think that, as the consumer base of smartphones and tables goes up, businesses will see the opportunities they are missing... On the other hand, there are many marketing tools available that are free (google maps, etc).

It's because, if they don't get any business through their regular site, why would it change with a mobile site? It seems useless to them.

Absolutely. The tough part is just that many businesses, especially the smaller mom and pop types still don't see or understand the value of mobile services because it is so uncommon. But that's where we come in as offline consultants It will definitely become much more common within the next 1-2 years I'd say to the point where it will almost be the norm.

Mobile coverage is growing at breakneck speed, my friend works for erricson & they are massively busy building the networks to cope with demand. However even my friend says we are still a couple years away from getting the speeds we get from our pcs

Mobile is absolutely the next big thing. As many are saying, the market is growing every day with millions of phones being sold consistently. I don't see any other market opening up the way mobile is/will.

It's already going in that direction. The more smartphones that sell, the more opportunity for sales. All my websites are mobile optimized with QR codes. If you can make it fast and easy for them to take an action (buy, opt-in, click ad, etc) the better the conversion as mobile folks browsing have a shorter attention span...

Obviously! And it has the reason as there was with the internet. We all know that why internet has became the most considerable place for marketing and in that the social networks. The only reason is the connect at one place and so it is the biggest market place, similarly mobile is next communicative place you can say where fast communication takes place within no time. Selling products and services through this by calling, messaging and other mediums will get directly to the user and so chances accordingly increases of bagging them.

Lets not forget Tablet Devices. In my honest opinion, I dont think people will really surf the net on their cell phones. I think cell phones will be used for instant info gratification. Cell phone users will use limited but specific apps that are connected to the net to satisfy their current interest. Using apps like facebook, yelp, foursquare, twitter and apps that give them instant info like weather, movie times or Q&A like wiki.

I think the real surfing will be done on Desktops, Laptops and Tablets. Desktops will slowly die off, but as battery tech improve, I believe light weight, powerful cloud based and long lasting battery laptops will dominate the "Surfing the Net" Market. I still believe by 2015 more people have access to the net on smartphones than people on laptops, but I believe more of the time spent "surfing" will be done on the laptops mentioned above.

Let not forget that the new breed of laptops are going to be considered more mobile than ever before. For example, Im down stairs in the lobby and the internet is down. So Im now on my 3G connection on my chromebook and I can stay down here for 7 more hours and not worry about battery life. I consider that pretty mobile.

A good idea, but already taken. It can be done with a derivative tech of NFC (Near Field Communication), but I believe their is a company using this idea with audio. Their are sounds the human ear can't hear but your cell phone can. Imagine walking by a clothing store and the sound emitted from that store activate the "always on" earing app you installed. Your phone vibrates and dings letting you know there is a 20% deal going on in that store. You go in and check it out. You pick up an item and head to the dressing room. While in the dressing room and other sound is emitted and your phone picks it up and letting you know that if you purchase this item in the next 10 minutes you will receive another 10% off (Countdown starts on your app...you see [9mins 57sec]...dang dang dang, buy buy buy.

End Imagination Here

Aren't many asian countries more mature in mobile than we are? Any trends that are popular there that we could adopt here?

With the bigger screen droids, mobile phones aren't too bad for surfing/net stuff. The new galaxy note looks interesting w/ even larger screen 5.3 in? and a stylus, what's old is new! I like the old idea of stylus w/ annotating and intuitive easy changes rather than hitting keys or pads to move a cursor. Old fashioned hand writing input is still pretty dang good, capturing notes on the fly etc...

A game changer for mobile would also be the embedded pico projector creating a large screen as well. Not sure how far off they are but lots of goodies that will make mobile even more robust and handy.

I personally can't believe Apple hasnt rolled out a larger screen iphone yet. After a droid, I'd never go back to such a small screen. I know Steve Jobs was insistent on keeping the size for one hand operation, but I bet he'd reconsider that now.

The voice input is getting phenomenal too. That makes mobile ease of use and data input HUGE. By making input much easier. My droid voice input and voice to text works incredibly well. I just press the 'mic' button and speak away for emails/texts etc...no typing hardly anymore.

I do not get the tablet craze. I have one and its ok for light reading but for any typing, it sucks. Mine sits at home unused in lieu of laptop. I'd use the tablet if traveling etc...Plus it's much more efficient navigating using a smaller laptop touchpad than it is swiping across a whole tablet screen. I'll be getting one of the new thin ultra books that are full function laptops that folds over into a tablet w/ a touch screen. I think that's the best of both worlds. Why get a tablet, then buy a bluetooth keyboard, for about the same price you get a full function ultrabook/tab convertible.

NFC and mobile payments etc... will only make the mobile more integral in our daily lives. I think we've only scratched the surface in mobile and there will be tons of opportunities new mobile biz ideas.

The mobile video chat opens up a whole new world. Qik and Ustream could spawn all kinds of biz opps. I was thinking of have remote golf pro coaching real time while you are on the course. Your buddy live streams your golf shot from the course to a remote coach and the coach gives you pointers via your bluetooth headset. A golf pro could be coaching a few players at a time $$$$

How bout how to fix something? your live mobile vid stream gives the remote pro the eyes and ears to tell you what to do, real time.

For me at this moment mobile marketing is one of the best platform all advertisers, especially small local businesses would do well not to ignore, and it is the next big thing; but whether it can be as big a next thing as we believe it will be lies with the decisions of consumers.

Mobile is definitely the next big thing!

It has already opened up so many avenues and possibilities for marketers alone and I believe it is just the beginning!

Personally I can't wait to see what else is coming for mobile!

Hi El Tigre!

We think you are right, but not because “PC is dead”, online marketing is still going strong and we don’t see it despairing as long as WEB is a part of our lives (which we think can stay solid for a long time).

Right now, mobile marketing seems huge mainly because it’s so new and has everybody talking we see more and more companies entering the market and forecast 2012 to be a boom for the mobile industry(rather than actually taking part) Seems like everybody are talking about it and taking a part of it. We also started a new mobile network ourselves and last year and it’s very profitable and we are seeing a significant increase of players which is growing month by month.

There are speculations of when mobile will take over the web advertising. The bottomline is that this is all about performance, it is 100% measurable. As we saw in end of year studies that companies are moving the majority of their marketing budgets to online rather than print, we believe we can expect to see this in mobile as well. To say that mobile will take over web, we can't see this happening anytime soon.

Its pretty hard to predict what the next big thing will be, but I think the general trend, especially with younger generations in tune with new technology, is headed in that direction. But there are always those who have other preferences. For example, people still subscribe to print magazines and things like that.

@ Meyowza - true, it's like Groupon in real-time.

I think the "mobile revolution" started many years ago and the thing about the "next big thing" is the hype that is associated with it which could be an illusion or a goldmine. As Warren Buffet says, "buy the fear" "sell the greed" or something like that.

I'm interested in working on NFC technology and a mobile advertising exchange. Anyone else out there interested in exploring this further?

Yes! I like the comments of its like Groupon but in real time. Mobile marketing has been very successful for a lot of companies! It will continue to grow. Everyone should consider adding other channels of marketing to their strategies as well. Think of a platform that offers email and mobile at the same time! PERFECT!

Mobile, as in phone? No way people will trade a 14" to watch videos, or discuss in a web forum to a 5" phone.

If the question is - will we see more people using their phones to surf the web - while away from a bigger monitor? Damn right they will. But you can ask anyone using a smart phone if they're willing to JUST use it to surf the web...

Not.

People make good money selling to the rich. But the rich got rich selling to the masses.

Re: Do you really Think Mobile Marketing is the best Next "Big Thing"??
Share on:

I provide mobile marketing solutions and, for what it's worth, here is what I think:

The potential for SMS Marketing is huge if local businesses implement an effective and well thought out campaign. It could well be the only advertising they need to invest in.

However, I think it's a different story for mobile websites. After you've got past all the hype (espcially in this forum, which is no bad thing) many people find it's not as big as you originally anticipated, especially viewing all these fantastic ideas that people have. The main reason is because a mobile website on its own is absolutely useless for any business.

That's why those that are just concentrating on selling mobile websites are disappointed because they can't and won't sell any.

However, a mobile website that is generating activity and brining in new customers is priceless. If you want to be a mobile marketer, you have to become an expert in not just creating mobile websites, but in how to generate traffic and gain profit through them.

There are countless posts which say "Mobile websites are HUGE for local businesses", but they're not. They're only huge if you can provide solutions by which local people know the business has a mobile website and they are going to use it. How would a small local shoe shop benefit from having a mobile website?? Why would people visit a small local shoe shop website on their phone - that is where the gold lies.

For example, I created a mobile website (shout out to Willr's WSO, its awesome!) for a succesful local restaurant as a favour because it was my first one and I wanted to see how it works. After about 4 months, I would guess that it has probably had about 4 hits max (I havnt checked). Im not fussed because we havn't worked on promoting it and I did it as a favour for business owner who is happy because he got it for free.

How are local businesses going to know about your website and how can it make money for your client?? - That is the question you need to know before you approach any business.

So before getting your hopes of generating $millions of income form selling mobile websites, I would recommend getting creative, coming up with lots of ways in which businesses can promote their mobile website (and why should visitors even bother visiting the site even when they know about it) and putting together a full plan before visting any business. It's exactly the same as a website, a business could spend hundreds of thousands on creating the best website ever made, but if nobody visits it and no business is generated, it's a complete waste of money and you're not going to be getting any referals.

For the newb's, it is too easy to get blinded by the hype on any subject in this forum, which clouds sensible and logical thinking. Especially when there is no proof behind people's claims, whilst some are very genuine, dont believe everything you read.

I think mobile marketing COULD be big, but it depends on how creative we get.

The end.

4 hits in 4 months? They must not get any traffic to their main website then either. If you have a redirect and have Google analytics going, you'll see the kinds of traffic that the mobile sites get.

I have a client (restaurant) that gets a consistent 30% of its traffic from mobile devices. Hasn't changed in months. This equates to about 500+ visitors per month to its mobile site. The page that gets the most traffic? The coupon page.

So if you have a restaurant with a mobile site, be sure you have coupons whereby visitors can show the coupon from their phone. Much better than paper and is very convenient for customers.

I agree, if I was being paid for the mobile site then I would be tracking etc, but I set it up for him as a favour. It might be getting 1000's of hits but I doubt it since people won't suddenly think when they're out "I know, lets have a look at JOES PIZZA on our phone".

That is my point exactly, if you're just selling mobile sites, don't expect a lot of business BUT if you're selling mobile sites and you can act as a "consultant", showing businesses how to make the most of them (such as the coupons idea you talk about) , you will get a lot of business and a lot of refferals.

(All in my opinion of course!)

Yahoo just announced that it was cutting part of it's workforce.

That's a real bummer.

But when asked about the future for Yahoo, they said they would focus on two areas.

1. Social
2. MOBILE

That's how important Mobile is.

They are setting themselves up to profit.

Very solid information and discussion on the thread. I really like the talk about being realistic.

As Benjam1n and xlfutur1 brought up it's crucial to consult or advise those businesses that you are building mobile website for on how to maximize them.

We run a 30 day free trial for our clients and work with them to produce results. We sell ROI and increased Revenues rather than all the technical stuff that sounds really cool but in the end it's all about the increase in ROI and Revenue. If you increase their ROI and Revenue you'll have a client for life and get referrals from those clients. Our 30 day trial is actually our 30 day closing process and relationship building process.

I know there's a lot of stuff and WSO's that tell you just do this and you'll make a ton of money. Reality Check...it doesn't happen that way. There's work involved and the most important work you'll do with mobile marketing for your clients is producing results.

Our tagline is "Mobile Marketing...It's Like Printing Money For Your Business!™" and it's true IF you work with the client to produce great results.

Mobile is without question not only the future, but the present. I have been working the mobile arena for some time (ever since the heads-up with a mastermind with Ryan Deiss), and even so, my 11 year old teaches me something new to do with my smart phone on an almost daily basis, lol.

One of the most impressive indicators to me is the fact that mobile phones have allowed global reach, unlike any previous technology in history. Underdeveloped countries that would never have been able to install wired systems are already connecting via mobile. Just this morning, I connected with a business partner on Facebook, visiting his homeland of Nigeria, and was only able to do so via his smartphone.

Mobile is the great equalizer. I love it, and learn more from it every day!

I think a big key in selling mobile marketing is to do research on the prospect and go in with a plan to show them how they can use mobile to make their current advertising more powerful.

I myself, like one of the posters here, work for a global mobile network so I know that are huge developments in mobile networks. Check out this JPMorgan repport:

http://www.navocate.com/Downloads/In...%20-%20JPM.pdf

Page 13:
Mobile data has ramped faster than fixed-line Internet. According to Cisco data, global mobile data traffic grew 2.6x in 2010, nearly tripling for a third year in a row. Moreover, Mobile data traffic (237 PB/month) is already
over 3x the size of global fixed-line Internet traffic (75 PB/month) in 2000. Despite a much larger base, mobile data growth rates are expected to be similar to the early days of fixed-line data growth going forward. Cisco expects a 92% CAGR for global mobile data traffic from 2010 through 2015 with smartphones (116% CAGR) and Tablets (190% CAGR) outpacing overall mobile data growth. For comparison, Cisco projects fixed-line Internet data increasing 42% during the same period, largely driven by increasing video consumption.

Also an interesting view has this guy here:

Communities Dominate Brands: The Big Picture "All the Stats" Total View to Mobile Industry, 2010 Edition

These numbers will become numbing very fast. So a bit of context. There are 920 million people who own and operate a car on the planet, thus paying for petrol and insurance and car maintenance regularly. There are 950 million people who watch multi-channel TV like cable TV or satellite TV and a vast majority of those pay to do so. There are about 1.15 Billion people with a landline phone account. About 1.2 Billion PC owners pay for an internet access (about half now on broadband). There are about 1.7 Billion households on the planet, so in most cases but not all, those involve rents, mortgages, electricity utility bills etc. But there are 4.6 Billion paid subscriptions to mobile telecoms. You get the picture. Mobile is the giant among lilliputs.

Mobile phones/smartphones will be one consumer touchpoint that no brands, advertisers & marketers can ignore. In fact, it might become the ultimate touchpoint.

Yes, i tend to think in terms of marketing it is/will the next big thing.

However, what marketers are doing currently with it is just the beginning.

This 'sector' is really something to watch out for.

You have to understand that mobile marketing will just become marketing. The way your cable tv service is being delivered is now through IP meaning internet. We are experiencing the tipping point of technology. It sucks for us because we have do all this cross platform marketing. Print, tv internet etc. Soon companies like google will let you set your daily marketing budget and you will get the biggest bang for your buck whether its a text ad in some commonly viewed area for your target market or a youtube video on someones refridgerator. The line between internet marketing and marketing in generally is slowly closing. The limitations to these technologies are closing in fast. Especially because every 18 months, the computing capacity doubles.

But yes, mobile will be huge over the next few years, especially as GPS targeting becomes more popular.

Being one that consults businesses on mobile marketing, focusing on the main three phases: Mobile websites, SMS Marketing and QR code marketing), Mobile Marketing is indeed going to be the future for small business advertising.

It is very frustrating to search for a website on a smart phone and see the site is a miniature version of the main website.

Using a smart phone is just that...being smart and up to date and - here is the thing - easy to navigate and use for websites and apps.

When you're out and about, take a look around at the amount of people who are engaged with their phone. Go to a mall and make it a point to look for those who are viewing their phone...

side note here... as I'm typing this I have the news on and they just had a story about smart phone use, and how it is expanding quickly!..No joke.

Now, think about what all those people are viewing and you'll realize the opportunity there for providing mobile friendly material. The need is HUGE.
The time is NOW to be prepared for the demand that is coming.

I do voice over work... here's a SAMPLE
