Bluetooth Marketing
Share on:

Hi ,

About Bluetooth Marketing, anybody already did a campaign like that ??

If Yes, how can i take the Pairing Code off?

Because the Pairing Code makes the campaign worse, this type of Media (BT Marketing) is called Proximity, so with the Pairing Code, the 'consumers' will not have the facility to acces the archieves sent on Bluetooth, right?

Thank you all,

I've heard of it, but haven't used it. Haven't heard very many good things about it. The concept sounds good on paper, send a marketing blast to any nearby bluetooth device. But if you put yourself in the shoes of a consumer, you know how irritating that would be, aside from making you leary that your device has just been hacked. Not good for customer relations. Your company would be remembered but not in a good way.

I don't think you can take the pairing code off, and if you did, it wouldn't go well with your targeted audience

I have never heard of this before. Almost seems like spamming to me? Am I right with that?

Thank you all,
Just to clear a few things up.

1) Bluetooth Marketing is NOT illegal regardless of what several people are posting, at least not in the US...I cant speak for other countries.

2) Pairing is necessary for a Handset to receive the promo messages

3) BIG DOWN SIDE: A Cellphone has to be in "Discoverable Mode" in order to be found by the BT Transmitter. Since virtually all Cellphones are set with Discoverable Mode turned off by default it severely limits the effectiveness of the technology

I tried Bluetooth marketing and had an expensive failure.

1.) Bluetooth must be turned on. Many phones, unless set for hands-free talking, may have Bluetooth off by default.

2.) Telling someone how to make his phone discoverable is not a trivial task. The 'discoverable" times out pretty quickly and then the phone is not "discoverable" any more. The good news is that if you contacted someone when they were discoverable, you can still communicate with them after the discoverable attribute turns back off. You WILL be undiscoverable to any new contacts. This is, apparently, something the government nanny requires to protect sensitive Americans from being exposed to <gasp> unsolicited ads.

3.) Imagine how willing someone is going to be to keep turning on the "discoverable" feature every 30 seconds or so, just in case someone wants to reach them.

4.) My application was to allow a health club to send offers to people driving by in the street directly in front of them. Bad news. The Bluetooth range is only 750 ft. Exceeding 750 ft. at 35 miles per hour results in only seconds of contact. Part of that time is Bluetooth asking if they wanted to see a message from the club. The answer probably vanished into the ether.

OK, so it appears that the prospect must make the phone discoverable and not be moving around very quickly so they don't get out of range. That says "limited usability" like nothing else does.

Bluetooth marketing has a lot more disadvantages than advantages. It works best if you have a display in a shopping mall that has signs up asking people to turn on bluetooth to receive a message with a link to a video or website, etc.

The random bluetooth marketing is going to get less and less effective as time goes on. There are very few people who are going to accept a bluetooth connection from an unknown source nowadays.
