I am new to mobile advertizing, how should I get started?
Share on:

Hello, this is Ernest. I am not new to search engine optimization, I am not new to email marketing, but I am new to mobile advertizing. I was reviewing mobile advertizing services, and it seems like most people like Avid Mobile and Lime Cellular the best. I have no experience with mobile marketing what so ever, so I don't want to screw up. I also hate that I am 20 years old and I live in a town where 95% of people have a phone and I never had one before. But I can always find someone with a phone somewhere.

Where do you get started?

How do you pick a keyword?

Is a smartphone required? Can you use a regular phone?

How long is there free trial?

Hi Ernest,

When you say mobile advertising, are you talking about pay per lick or pay per call advertising on mobile phones or are you referring to setting up sms/text message campaigns for clients?

It seems that you are talking about sms marketing so I am going with that assumption.
Honestly, I have no experience with either avid mobile or lime cellular but have seen other marketers here on the forum recommend both.

Personally I use trumpia for their features, training and support. I would spend some time researching at least a few different sms providers, compare their features, pricing, etc before you sign up with one. Most do offer free trials. Trumpia offers a 30 day free trial, not sure about avid mobile and lime cellular.

In terms of how you pick a keyword, this really depends on what type of businesses you plan on targeting. Let's say you plan on targeting restaurants at first. You would want to set up a keyword pertaining to that niche, maybe something like text "freecoupon" to "short code". You can use this one keyword and autoresponder message to demo your sms services to prospective clients.

Now once you land a client, keeping with the restaurant theme, you would want to make their keyword something similar or even the name of their restaurant or a variation of that for a branding effect.

A customer does not need a smartphone to subscribe to a client's text message list. Any mobile phone with texting capabilities will do.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any further questions, and I can PM you if needed.

Adam

You can opt for PPC once you have got your own mobile site developed. You can also use your own mobile site for providing ad space to businesses and earn money through it.

Ernest,

I just started with mobile, running a couple dating offers right now, targeting international markets, due to the lower CPM. Now what I am talking about is running offers on a mobile ad network, such as Admobi, via a simple text ad or banner. So Photoshop is essential in that regard, because I am almost certain that banner perform better than plain text, especially if its dating - where guys care about three things: 1. Tits 2. Ass 3. Face.

So far it seems relatively simple. In regards to KW targeting, use Keyword Spy and G.'s Adwords tool to find KW relative to your niche. Input these keywords. Currently my CPM (Cost per 1000 impressions) is at $1.00 to start - will bump to $3.00 or $4.00 here soon enough to see what the traffic difference is, so that is relatively cheap, meaning I can start pretty broad (but of course specificity matters) and with a good amount of relevant KWs. My friend (owns a network), recommended 15 - 30 to start, but others such as Ryan Eagle (EWA) recommend 100's which seems little excessive, but its a learning process so just do what works.

I have no experience with SMS, personally I do no think too highly of it since I cannot stand getting a text message, interested to see who it hit him up - only to find its a stupid advertisement (which I didn't opt for). So unless your audience is expecting a text, then it seems like your fishing in a relatively empty pond.

There are many mobile ad networks out there, and international markets are really cheap, so if this is something that you are just getting into, I would start like that, get some experience, and progress accordingly.

Good Luck!!

Personally, I am going to hold off on the mobile side of things for the time being. Like many of you guys, I have found that there just isn't enough guidance yet.

Yes, I am doing Trumpia now. I am looking at the tutorial videos, and they are kind of confusing. How to I send texts to other people? Can you please tell me more about getting traffic?

HBurner, PPC will be a good idea.

this is really good advice. I couldn't say it any better.
if it is for smart phones and mobile web and such I would say go with a company that is specific to mobile advertising. If they specialize in it - USUALLY they are going to be better then someone who just blankets everything and doesnt make it a priority....

words of advice

Hi Ernest, I wanted to tell you a bit that I do regarding SMS Marketing, I own a white lable big word for being able to sell key words allong with so many messages to anyone using my short code of 35-xxx I got into it because I started a local coupon business in my city where I use my City name as the keyword for people to opt into if they would like to get text coupons from local businesses. Then I solicite local businesses and tell them I have a list of subscribers that all live in or around our city all waiting for a deal or coupon from their business. The business sets the deal or coupon I ask them to make it a good one as the better the offer the more chances people will use them. It is a great program and the people that opt in are dying for deals. It's basically a localized groupon without beating up the businesses either. I charge a one time fee to the business to send the coupon to my list and I also use an email optin for those that don't want text coupons. So between posting it to my website I created just for it there are many ways for people to get the coupons as I post on our facebook page and tweet the deal for the duration of the coupon usually 2 weeks. So even as my list of subscribers is growing the word gets out via social media as well. I'm on my way to having a thousand subscribers and that is when I will start charging more money from the businesses, right now I charge $50 and my goal is to charge $100 and even if nobody redeems a coupon it is great advertising for the business owner as it is targeted to the local community. That is how I use SMS and I also offer SMS Services for any business. I offer one keyword along with 500 texts for $25 a month and a one time set up of $25. You get your own login to the back office to set up your automated response and then you just log in and type your message hit send and off it goes to your list of subscribers. It is an awesome way to make some cash but it does take a little time to build your list if you don't have advertising money which I didn't and grew my list via facebook and passing out business cards Anything is possible if you believe in it. I hope that helps you understand a bit more of what you can do with sms marketing. I never send and it is illegal to send a text to someone that hasn't opted in to receive that text so all my subscribers are eager to get a message. You can read more about my service at Flipit4u Marketing that is my marketing business and I have nothing but happy clients. Good luck with what ever you choose and keep us posted. Chris
