Howdy....I'm getting ready for another "Tourist" season in my area. I'm setting up an "OnLine Directory" for the upcoming "Tourist" season that usually begins around Memorial Day and goes till Labor Day. Because part of my Promo Program, this year, has to do with using QR Codes.... all the Owners & Managers of my local Hotels/Motels tell me that "THEY THINK" that....OVER 90% of their Room Renters carry some sort of Mobile Device.....I'm looking for Info on.... ...WHAT PERCENT of "Travelers/Tourists" carrying Mobile Devices...can SCAN A QR CODE? Since I'll be dealing with Hotels/Motels....I do NOT want to provide an APP to be downloaded onto the Mobile Devices these Travelers/Tourists staying at local Hotels/Motels will have to download onto their already "App-Full" mobile devices. On my "Front Desk Displays" announcing my "Town Directory"....I will provide a QR Code, for Mobile Devices that CAN Scan them AND....a URL Address for those who have "Browser Access"....so they can get to my "Town Directory". So....I'm wondering if anyone here knows of or has info re: "What Percentage of Smart Phones are set up to SCAN...QR Codes! Thanks much, Don Alm |

Scanning a QR Code requires the Smartphone User to download a QR Scanning app to their Phone BEFORE they can scan a QR Code. Only around 1/2 of Cellphone Users have Smartphones so I would STRONGLY recommend building in a SMS aspect to your campaign.

"O" percent! That's interesting. Yesterday afternoon...I was shopping for some items (and doing some Research) and I visited SIX of the TOP Retailers in my area; WALMART COSTCO LOWE'S HOME DEPOT STAPLES OFFICE DEPOT At EACH ONE of these Giant Retailers....I saw QR Codes on items IN THE STORES! So....if MOST of the SmartPhone users are NOT able to SCAN...QR Codes... WHY are these MAJOR retailers offering them to Shoppers? Don Alm...researching |

The Scanning Apps are Free so there is no cost to the consumer. You might also consider instructions for Smartphone Owners to download the app. The phones are capable to do so...but not able to do so until the Scanning App has been installed.

Close to 100% of cell phones have some sort text message capability. About 50% of cell phone users have a smartphone. So its safe to say 100% can participate on the text message campaign and haft of them will be able to click on a link in that campaign that will take them to the internet.

Also its a good a idea to add a QR Code for the people who are afraid of text message marketing abuse. Not that you will abuse it, it's just these are the same people who prepared for Y2K and believe in the 2012 apocalypse.

Hotel Clients are statistically more of a "Smartphone" Demographic so I would say that you shouldnt have any trouble with your Campaign... The nicer the Hotel the higher the percentage of smartphone users. A Mom and Pop Motel VS a Hyatt...etc. However, just as with any Tech...people run out and buy it, but few actually understand how to use it. It is important that your Campaign Signage provides instructions for use. It will make a HUGE Difference. Since just about every cellphone in use is SMS Capable you wont have any worries on that portion of the campaign. Now...here is another consideration... While the majority will have internet access via their cellphones, keep in mind a certain portion of those users will have "Feature Phones" People with a Feature Phone do not have the capability to "Pinch & Zoom" so it is EXTRA important that whatever Webpage you are directing them to be "Mobile Friendly" so that they can actually read the contents. Judging by the questions you are asking, I am getting the impression that you are inexperienced in the industry and could probably use some guidance. If you have specific questions I don't mind fielding a phone call. you can get me through my Office at 800.928.4973 Ext 313

AHA! This afternoon, I discovered the REAL REASON Why my previous participants were giving me "objections" to RENEWING my "Mobile Directory" program for Tourists".... which involves placing Displays at the Front Desks of Hotels for Guests to "SCAN THE QR CODE!" I had set up last year in THREE towns. When I asked the question in my 1st post re: WHAT Percentage of "Tourists/Travelers" checking into my participating Hotels can SCAN the QR Code on my displays....and the response was "None!"...because even though people have SmartPhones....they CAN'T Scan QR Codes because that takes "Downloading an APP or a "Reader"! AU CONTRARE! This got me to jump into my 4-wheeler and truck on down to the local AT&T and VERIZON Dealers to SHOW them my Display and...ask them; "What Percentage of Travelers/Tourists seeing THIS Display would NOT be able to SCAN THE QR CODE?" The answer from BOTH stores....from the Mgr AND Staff was....mostly....NONE! Upon further questioning they ALL AGREED that, MOST of the people checking into local hotels....WILL BE ABLE TO SCAN MY QR CODES!" So....I suddenly realized the REASON WHY I was having a hard time RENEWING my clients for this year. The reason is....GREED! With my first try at this I charged the MOON and...because I didn't have an actual, detailed TRACKING SYSTEM in place....ALL my clients KNEW the program worked for them BUT....they we're ready to Spend the kind of money I was asking. So....I forgot the MAIN Business Doctrine; "You can be a PIG in business BUT....once you become a HOG....you WILL LOSE!" So....my "Greed Glands" got the best of me...and I realized my objections to Renewals was NOT because the program was NOT working and Tourists/Travelers were NOT...Scanning My QR Codes! They WERE! My clients ALL told me they had "Good" business from my program. The objections were because I had NOT shown EVIDENCE that the programs was working as much as I told my clients it was working....for them to dish out a BIG wad of cashola to me. So....by NOT being a "HOG"...I was able to renew 2 accounts this afternoon and WILL Renew MOST of my clients for thsi coming Tourist Season....and...allow me to use them to help me set up other towns for the upcoming 2012 Tourist Season. Again....THANK YOU FELLOW WARRIORS....for allowing me to "Get My Head On Straight" and discover the "problem"! It was MY Greediness! Hopefully...I can return the favor Don Alm....entroopeneer |

Hi, it seems to me that people are becoming more and more knowledgable about Qr Codes. Most Android phones have a QR scanner pre-installed. It's all about how you display your QR Code and if you add a call to action. You need to entice enough curiosity for the potential client to get out their smartphone and scan the code. Good luck with your campaign! |

Dude all of this is completely irrelevant, if you're calling to sell mobile sites with a QR code and somebody asks you how many people use them or whatever, simply say something along the lines of "smart phones are one of the fastest growing verticals on the planet, in the next few years 90% of new phones bought will be smart phones which all have the capability to read QR codes" Exact percentages are useless in the current market, focus on the future for this kind of stuff. |

However there is even a bigger issue at hand... He is wanting to jump in with both feet before he actually has learned what he needs to know about Mobile Marketing...and thats Dangerous...both to his Client and to the Industry. Posted from Warrior Forum Reader for Android

My old Blackberry was able to read QR codes right out of the box... but this was only for adding contacts to your Blackberry Messenger. Not sure why they didn't just let you scan any type of QR codes.

I really don't understand why you people keep pushing QR codes to your clients when all it is, is a tax write-off... there is no way that a business owners i going to get a good ROI, even if you give QR codes for free, he still has to change the menu's, billing forms, ads, boarding etc etc etc... Selling QR codes to businesses is imho the biggest mistake you can make, because QR codes are never going to take off. You will be having a pissed of client with a bad ROI, really good for your own reputation.
