Can you mix cms for mobile sites
Share on:

Hi

Slowly starting to get the hang of the mobile thing, it's been a struggle but thanks to all the advice here on the forum i am making headway. Just a couple of more questions if anyone is able to help.

When a client asks for a mobile site and they want it as a sub domain on their hosting, do you build the site on your own hosting and transfer when complete or ask for their details and build it directly on their hosting? Your preferences!!!

Secondly, Can you build the mobile site using a different cms to the main site?
EG can i build the mobile site using wordpress on a sub domain even though the main site is not wordpress and then just use a redirect?

Thank you

Z

Judging by the wording of your questions I am going to assume you arent actually coding sites and are simply using a CMS.

If a client is paying upfront then building it on their hosting is probably going to be easier.

If they are paying after completion that might not be such a good idea.

As for your subdomain question, Yes...you can upload the CMS to a subdomain even if the Main site isnt CMS Based.

My preference would be to host it for them. That way you don't need them to get the site uploaded, and don't worry about passwords changing in the future when you need to make changes, etc. Easier for the client and for you. I think it makes you look more professional.

Absolutely, you can use a different CMS. Think of the mobile and full websites as two separate "domains", they can be on entirely different servers.

The only time you should not use a different CMS is for ecommerce sites or other large sites where the information needs to be the same on the mobile and full websites (list of products or inventory, customer logins, etc). Otherwise your customer will need to manage the two sets of information twice, and won't be happy about that.

I know by asking this question, it shows my ignorance, but just what do you mean my CMS?

I'm having the same issue. Some of them have wordpress them another directory where it may be a straight html mobile design. Whats a good cms to edit the mobile ones? I thought about cushycms, but it sometimes gets weird.

Also, do you know one that can handle editing restaurant menus/ Most of the ones i see online are their own system and outrageously priced. I just want them to be able to edit there own menu items.i,e food ;-)
