Is Mobilizer accurate?
Share on:

Hey all,
Sorry for the technical question.

Like many of you, I've been using Mobilizer to see what websites look like on a smartphone. I've seen a pretty big discrepancy today between Mobilizer and Google's mobile tester ( Ready to Go Mo? ).

On Mobilizer, one website looks completely non mobile friendly (scrolling etc) while on GoMo it looks very small but fine, no scrolling or anything.

My question is, has anyone else experienced discrepancies like that and which one was right? I don't have a smartphone (yet) to test it on.

I'd feel horrible if I contacted the company I'm targeting telling them their website is useless, just for the guy to type it on his phone and see it works fine.

Thanks for the help.

No simulator can duplicate all mobile phone screen displays. I have the same problems you have wiht Mobilizer at times. For what it's designed to do, Mobilizer is the best I've seen.

One caution I have is to avoid using third party web-based mobile site simulators. Often people will enter the URL for a client or prospect's existing crappy website there, to test. The client or prospect gets a call from the company hosting the simulator the next day about -- you guessed it -- making their crappy site mobile ready. See how that works?

Not all phones treat websites the same so there is no right or wrong answer here. A lot of the more popular phones nowadays will show a zoomed out version of the site when you first land on it. This does NOT mean the site is mobile optimized though. To use that site you will then have to zoom in and scroll all over the place. Mobile sites are also about a lot more than just appearance. One of the main advantages is the speed in which a mobile site loads compared to a standard website.

On a side not, NEVER tell someone their website is useless. It's not. You won't get very far if you insult their business or website. By saying something like that you are basically calling them stupid because they paid for that website. Their standard website is fine for the purpose in which it was built.
