Mobile Simulator Not Showing Full Site
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Hey everyone,

I'm making flyers right now, that compare the customers standard vs mobile website, and I'm using the images from a mobile simulator to put on the flyer.

But pulling up my mobile sites on the simulator, some of the customers have bigger logos and it doesn't show half of the main menu, or the footer buttons/info.

Any solutions for this?

I read your post a few times and am a little confused. Perhaps you could clarify...

Are you pulling up...

A) their mobile sites,
B) their normal sites or
C) your mobile sites?

If A) - then someone made them a bad mobile site which might be a good "in" for you.

if B) - you would expect their normal site not to look good on a mobile (which is why they need you to build them a good mobile site) again, this would be a good "in" for you as well.

if C) - then you would need to make a site that is a good showcase of your skills as a mobile site builder. Just as an aside; I visited your site ricter.mobi on my iPhone and it's not yet optimised for mobile. This is probably the first place I would start so that you can show them you know how to make an "optimised for mobile" site.

Getting back to your problem; which mobile simulator are you using? Some websites may already have a mobile site which is displayed as soon as the site recognises they are visiting from a small browser (like a mobile/cell/smart phone). From what I've experienced most site simulators just display the website they are sent to because a simulator is not recognised as a mobile phone and so it displays only the regular version. When approaching businesses I would visit their site in an actual mobile/cell/smart phone to make sure they don't already have a (redirected to) mobile version.

Not sure of that helps but if you'd like to clarify exactly what the problem is I/we might be able to help a little more.

Whilst simulators are handy you cant beat using a real device - both the iphone and the new androids enable you to take screenshots very easily now, use firefox and the mobile barcoder to speed up the process of pulling up sites on your phone... mobile barcoder plugin generates a QR code for each url you visit in firefox that you can then quickly scan and pull up on your phone...

answer Mr Bills questions and we will be able to help you more - if you can share a screenshot of what your experiencing that will help too

cheers

Thanks for the reply guys.

I am using "Mobilizer" to do 2 side by sides on a flyer, first what THEIR website currently looks like on a mobile phone and then MY mobile sample version of their site. However when using "Mobilizer", the .jpg that I save when I have my sample mobile version of their site up, is too big because of some logos so it doesn't show the full menu or the map/call/facebook buttons i have on the bottom.

I will be going into businesses and showing them on MY smartphone what their current and what my mobile sample version look like, I just am asking about the simulators because I want it to show my full sample homepage for them on the flyer as well. Make sense?

Yes Mr. Bill, I am going to of course make a mobile version of my ricter.mobi, I've just been busy trying to do pages for others right now hah, since no one has really visited my site besides me it wasn't too high priority, but I need to get it done now.

So what your saying is your mobile site is not showing properly so what program are you using to build your mobile websites?

Oh, I see, so the mock-up of your site is not displaying the full length of the proposed site because the logos are taking up the top part of the site so they would (normally) have to scroll down to see the rest of the site. This could also occur in the vertical viewing angle but is worse on the horizontal viewing angle.

The only way I see around this is to "make" a full length image in something like photoshop by taking several screen-shots by scrolling down the site and splicing them all together. This would show the full length of the site but would obviously break out down below the "shell" of the iphone.

The only work around I can think is to place the iphone on the layer above the long image, fade the bottom of the iphone (to show and suggest that there is more to the site than is viewable in one screen full) and have the rest of the site hanging down below the iPhone with maybe a 75-85% transparency (of the bit hanging down below the viewable window) to show there is more to the site than is viewable without scrolling.

Does that make sense or would you like me to make a "sample" to illustrate?

Quentin, it's showing properly it's just that normally on the phone you would scroll down to see the menu as well as the footer, but when I have the side by side comparisons on the flyer I would like to be able to zoom out so I can show my full mobile sample page for them.

Mr Bill, That is exactly the problem, sorry if I wasn't great at explaining the issue but your spot on. I will try out what you said and get back to you guys after I've done so.

Thanks guys

Never one to shy away from a photoshop challenge I had to try it out myself. I had to use a stronger opacity (34%) but I think it gets the point across. In the first example I decided to remove the iPhone navigation because it made it a bit messy down there. In the second example you can see what I mean.

Edit: Here's the layered photoshop file so you (or anyone) can do it yourself. I've cropped the canvas so if your site is longer that the "Wilson-Limo" site all you need to do is click "Image --> Canvas Size --> increase the height" to suit.

Click here to download the Transparent iPhone PSD

Photoshop Tip: When adjusting the canvas size make sure "relative" is unchecked to it doesn't adjust the width as well.

Wow Mr. Bill, that is great. Thank you for taking the time and trying that out. Honestly that looks pretty good and I could totally put something like that on the flyer just so they know that you scroll to see the rest.

Cheers

You're welcome - it was fun. I've edited my post to include the psd so you (and others) can do it yourselves if you like.
