Does anyone know who Twilio obtains their virtual numbers through or do they host there own sms gateway?

Twilio is a Tier 2 Telecom (older knowledge) and SMS Aggregator (current knowledge). Their aspirations are higher I would think with thin margins and a guess that especially on Toll-Free numbers, they are paying someone out there for network access.

They have access to blocks of numbers they create Long Codes out of and they host their own SMS Gateway. They are also a RESPORG so they can grab toll-free numbers in the spare pool.

Why is that important to you?

So what is the difference between a twilio number and a virtual number like you would get from phones.com?

No difference really, they are phone numbers, except the fact that you can use the Twilio developers platform to create your own voice and sms apps.
