I'm doing this on my mobile phone because my PC is busy downloading a complete back-up from Carbonite due to a hard drive crash. Please back-up. There are several companies you can use to back-up off site. That way if the worse happens, like a fire, you still have your data. It's better to spend a day restoring your data than weeks trying to recreate it.

I've also started using Dropbox. Also handy when you need to share files with developers or business partners.

I use carbonite. They can back-up your OS also.

Good points Steve! I recently got a 1TB USB 3 drive to backup my mac and pc and feel a bit safer now, but in the worst case of physical water or fire damage to my place I'd be up the creek. May have to try out Carbonite though. Dropbox has been just too slow for the few files I've shared with people there, I couldn't imagine backing up 100GB or more with them, but Carbonite's no size limit for a small yearly fee seems more than reasonable. Cheers, Steve |

There are several backup providers on the internet. Google "online backup".

I too use dropbox, but the free version is only 2GB and that is not as much as it sounds. I had a bad crash due to the ukash virus last week, which cost me 2 days to recover. I have now decided to work from USB sticks, no data on the hard drive except software. Sticks 1-7 for each weekday rotating, and then 4 sticks for each week stored at another place. Should there be another virus attack destroying everything I can buy a new computer and be up and running within two hours. |

Dropbox is the best and easiest way to go. I got the $9.99/month package with 50GB awhile ago, but they recently upgraded the account to 100GB...not bad at all.

I use dropbox too, but I never feel 100% secure putting all my faith in one company to store all of my data. What's another good company I can use? Either way, I always back everything up on an external just to be safe. |

another +1 for dropbox - ive actually started backing up a lot of my sites directly to dropbox now too one other thing i would highly recommend and its extremely handy too - is xmarks to backup your bookmarks - its also an essential addon for anyone who uses more than 1 machine as you can sync your bookmarks across all devices even mobile! hope that helps someone - losing a few years bookmarks can be detrimental to your business and they are often over looked. cheers jay |

Make sure if you are going to signup for Dropbox that you first ask someone else who is already a member to refer you. That way you get an additional 500MB taking your free total to 2.5GB

I recently started using SugarSync. Their free storage starts at 5Gig and it is easy to increase it. I have files synced between 2 computers and my phone, but I can also share files with a partner and avoid worrying about version numbers on files. |

If you have the ability, or do development i highly recommend putting subversion on another computer on your network. It really is the best method next to time machine or manual back ups to an external drive...

I should totally get a backup done asap, it's been a while. I used to backup to CD's back in the days, then DVD's. But given the low survival rate of those mediums that's no long term solution. Also by today's standards they just can't take enough data. When switching from IDE disks I decided to back all my important data to those drives, they are now safely stowed away in the basement. Then again I probably won't be able to plug them in anywhere in a few years time. Online storage is probably the best solution for now. But is it safe? | |

Dropbox is good but it only stores/shares files. Your software installs of course won't be backed up...

A great idea, thanks for the reminder. Contantly tell myself need to back up all the files before some virus hit the hard drive and keep on postponing. I guess it's too late when that happens so we all have to remember to back our data. thanks.
