Hello,
I want to use online QR codes generators to generate QR codes and then resize them in Photoshop to correct size as my need as the generated code is always quite huge.

So is it ok to resize or the mobile QR code reader will give error?

Sorry I dont have a mobile QR code reader so I am asking this.

There is no right or wrong answer to this question.

Every QR code is different and some have more detail than others based on how much information is stored inside the QR code. Some QR codes have very small squares inside them whilst others are much larger and easier to scan.

You will need to test your own QR code. If you want to resize it then do so and then test scanning the QR code using a number of different QR code apps. If it still works then it's fine. If not then you will need to increase the size of it.

Having said that, the bigger you can keep your QR code the better. Not only will it be easier for people to scan but it will also draw more attention to it.

Also remember when using a QR code that you should ALWAYS include a text version of the link either beside or below the QR code so those without QR code readers can still access the page.

try and use a vector based qr code if you are going to scale your qr code - that way your qr code will always remain sharp

General rule of thumb is that you want the QR code to be built in vector so that you can resize as large as you want! (Illustrator is better for this than Photoshop)

The BIGGEST thing is to shorten the link using bit.ly or another URL Shortener..

The reason is that every character is encoded into the QR code, so the more characters, the more squares required. That's why some QR codes look like a total MESS (and are virtually unscannable) because people embed long links.

With a very short URL, there are only sometimes only 18 characters total, making the QR code VERY clean.

For example, see this - which is very short - look how clean the code is:

The less characters (and squares), the EASIER it is to scan! This increases "scanability" for older phones with dated cameras, or placing them on larger/moving objects (never understood QR codes on busses lol).

As long as you do a "bilinear resample" you should be OK (there is normally several options when you click the resize tool)

Do not use the "Pixel resize" option or it will screw the QR code up completely.

I recommend resizing QR codes using "Nearest Neighbor" setting. It doesn't add any anti-aliasing, so it's just like zooming in with Photoshop.

I like Free QR Code Tracking, Custom QR Codes & Mobile Web (Azonmobile) for creating QR codes.

There is a free option which allows you to create different styles, sizes, colours and embed a logo.

And you can specify the amount of "error correction" the code has.

Worth trying out. I'm not an affiliate.

That shouldn,t be a problem. A QR code can be damate up to 30% and still working. BUT JUST MAKE sure you test your qr code. If you get a smart phone qr code readers are free most of the time...

There are two types (families) of QR codes - bitmap images, such as gif, jpg and png and also the vector images such as pdf and svg formats.

The gif, jpg and png can be read by virtually all web browsers, hence, if you are inserting an image into a website and want it to be read by the majority of visitors then you should choose one of the first three types of image, the bitmap image types. If you are going to use the QR code for printing in leaflets and most definitely for large print output such as posters then you should use a vector type image. The vector image files contain instructions for drawing the image rather than a set of dots and hence are independent of the size of image produced. This is the type that is expected by professional printers as it can be expanded without any loss of clarity.

Turning to your question – you can resize images but resizing bitmaps, gif, jpg and png format images, can lead to a loss of clarity and this can hamper the QR code scanning process.

You mentioned that you want to use online QR code generators but that "the generated code is always quite huge". This has not been my experience as most QR code generators will allow you to select the size of the output image. It is much better to select the size which meets your final requirements rather than accepting a different size QR code and then attempting to resize it in a graphics editing program.

Scan rates can also improved by reducing the amount of data encoded into the QR code, by using a URL shortening service, and encoding at the lowest data correction level which will meet your needs. QR codes can be encoded at L, M, Q and H encoding levels. This ranges from an error correction level of 7% up to 30%. Whilst using the highest error correction level means that the code can still be read if it is damaged it also means that additional data is included in the code to achieve this. This results in a more dense pattern of dots which can reduce the ability to scan the code. If your QR code is going to be on a website and therefore immune from being partially destroyed or obscured then you should opt for the lower scan levels.

I have resized some of my custom designed qr codes with no problem.

But do make sure that you check that the qr code is working after you resize it.

It may not work depending on the circumstances.

Yes QR codes can be re-sized but it may make them non-working as some QR code readers may not be able to extract information from the image. If you are having a lot of info in the code better not to re-size it, and if you do so make a complete testing that it works with different QR code readers.

Hey guys, is it even legal to reply such an old thread? Well I hope it's okay. I've worked on a QR Code project before so just want to help out a little bit here.

To begin with, yeah you can resize a QR Code or any other barcode images, but, it might not be readable it the QR Code turns too blurry for scanning. You can tell when the module (the black and white cube thing) is distorted or the edge gets fuzzy.

So my suggestion is to create a QR Code with a desired size in the first place. If resize is the only choice, then I suggest you get a QR Code with the a higher resolution and error correction level (ECL) for better readability.
