Why are mobile sites so popular?
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

I'm I missing something?

I don't want people to look at my site from a little mobile. I want them to visit it from a computer or tablet. I want to offer them the chance to sign up.

Do people sign up to lists from a mobile? I think if they enjoyed my site they'd take 2 minutes to read it from a computer/tablet every week.

Is that selfish?

It seems to me that mobile sites are about as much use as people reading your articles from an RSS reader.

People can access your website anywhere they are so I think that's the reason why they are popular....

Little mobi sites can help point people to your key pages. Check out these types of sites for eBay and Amazon, as examples.

They also are excellent tools to have live if your prospects and clients are trying to use your local info for GPS, Google maps, etc., and for quick click phone calls and SMS. Doesn't hurt to have these little mobi pages today for all the many people who use their smartphones day in and day out - electronic tablets, notebooks, ebook readers, etc. aside

It is not about making your site more quite. It is about making your site accessible to every people wherever they are situated.

It is something that people can do easily. so making a mobile friendly site can ensure more business for you. Also the mobile users are increasing day by day that means if you do not have a mobile version of your site you will lose a lot of potential clients.

Hope this helps...

I could be wrong but based on my observation, mobile optimized sites are more popular for local businesses especially for restaurants, locksmiths, etc

Mobile has taken the world by storm largely because of the applications that users are able to download and use on their smartphones. They provide instant information and provide customers with a direct way to contact a business from their iPhone.

I am not sure if many of us are going to agree with this but Gartner says that by 2013, mobile phones will overtake PCs as the most common Web access device worldwide. Which is a reminder for all those web designers to brush up on their mobile skills if they want to stay in business.

Exact Target reports that 16% of Smartphone users report that they have made a purchase as a result of a marketing message they received on their phone. 55% purchased as a result of an email they received on their mobile device. Turns out email isn’t dead after all.

Nielsen also said that in Q3 2011, teens increased their mobile data consumption by 256% over the prior year. I hope their parents had them on unlimited data plans.

Inneractive found that there is a direct correlation between the size of a mobile device’s screen and the click-through rate (CTR) the device yields for mobile advertising. For instance, the iPhone yields a 4.35% CTR with a 3.5" screen, compared to a 6.61% CTR on the iPad’s 9.7" screen.

Cheers,

I've just updated my main site to a responsive theme, so that it looks great whatever device it is viewed upon - phone, tablet or monitor. There is a definite trend for handheld devices to be the only way that people access the internet, particularly in Europe and Asia, and most particularly younger people.

I don't care how people view my site, as long as they do.

Also, teenagers love to view sites using their mobile phones.

We setup and design wordpress sites using the Divi theme for roughly 200 USD. Let's talk.

It is estimated that by 2013 (next year!) more people will be visiting your website via a mobile device than a desktop PC.

Those facts speak for themselves.

Mobile is THE new Internet. We all used to build websites to suit desktop PC's but soon our audience will be using their mobiles to search the web more often than their desktop PC's. So it only make sense you at least have a version of your site that targets those mobile users.

Why are mobile sites so popular?
Because "mobile marketers" make money by telling people they "need" them.

I have been a running a poll on that subject. I asked these questions on this forum, and on three of my sites:

Smart phone users
"Would you prefer to be sent directly to a mobile version of this site?"
"Do you prefer using the full version of this site?"
"Would you prefer to be given the choice of which version to view?"

I put the answer options in a different order on each site. The results are too small to be statistically significant, but were consistent. 66% prefer to be given the option of which site to visit. 22% prefer to go directly to the mobile version and 11% prefer to use the main site.

I have one client (running a bed and breakfast business) who has a separate .mobi site. We have a clear link in the header that says "mobile site click here". Virtually no-one ever uses it. (This is the site if you want to look Little Acre Luxury B&B)

Personally, I don't need to put clear link in the header that says "mobile site click here" or a button perhaps.

I used a plugin wherein if a desktop site is viewed on a mobile phone, it automatically redirects to its mobile optimized site.

Will,
I know that for local businesses a mobile optimized site with prominent call button included normally is the most recommended way to go, but what can you say about a website that sells digital info online, would you advice a mobile optimized site (changing all the outlay for a simplified version) or just a mobile responsive site (allowing to make it viewable on any device, but basically maintaining the original design)?

Failing forward fast

That's not true. I invite people to run Google Analytics on their site and then take a look at the percentage of their visitors who are on a mobile device. You might be surprised.

So twice as many people said they would prefer the mobile site over the main site? That's quite a BIG difference to me.

I had a look at the 'mobile' site you linked to but I have to say it's quite bad. I mean no offence by that, really. But it's absolutely tiny and I would imagine people have just as hard a time reading and navigating that site as they would the main site.

A mobile site should have bigger text, bigger links, and stretch and shrink automatically to fit the screen width of the device viewing it.

Yes, you should always allow people to go back to the main desktop site if they wish and some industries are going to be more mobile oriented than others.

But to say mobile websites are only popular because marketers tell us we need them is not something I can agree with. There's a VERY good reason all of the BIGGEST websites in the world have mobile versions. They understand exactly where the web is heading.

Good point. As I just wrote in the post above, every industry and market is different so there is no one size fits all approach.

Having said that, I think at the very least nowadays having a responsive design is only going to be beneficial to your business. It's no secret the world is going mobile and we all need to keep up with that.

For local service based businesses I would always recommend a standalone mobile site because they have a larger percentage of their traffic searching whilst on the go and looking for quick access to certain bits of information.

But for a digital products type site, at the moment, just a responsive design that stretches and shrinks is definitely a great start.

Rosetrees, I hope you are aware that your client's mobile site appears like this (let's say almost like this since I just used a mobile emulator to get this screenshot).

I agree with this, the only device my wife uses to get on the Internet is her phone. Come to think of it, my mom is the same way, but she uses an iPad..but she only uses the Facebook app and the email function...it's nice an simple for her.

This is so true Will.

Think about your self. You can't always be in front of your laptop or desktop PC to check out the latest Facebook updates, read the news, browse the Warrior Forum.

It happens some times to be on the subway, eating lunch on a restaurant or hanging out with some friends at Starbucks. You could always take out your mobile phone and check the latest news.

Internet is everywhere. Not only in your home or work place

well, for the forseable future i have seen no numbers that indicate most people will be visiting most sites via 4 inch phones. Yes, tablets are on the rise, but there is still a "normall(ish)" amount of screen real estate on those.

people need to understand that things like FB are really skewing the mobile numbers to make people look much more active on the web via mobile phones.

rather than guess at this stuff, just watch how you and your friends use mobile phones to interact with the internet.

Most people use mobile internet for
1. social media
2. quick google searches where they often never even leave the google site
3. phone number or address lookups.
4. a quick check of email where people are usually more picky about what they open and what they leave for later (when they are at the pc).

most people do not regularly use their mobile phones to search for non-location specific solutions to most of their problems. Mobile integration is huge for local business, but not so much for any of the things people do more normal research on before they make buying decisions.

food for thought....

RE social media...

Think about all the external links that are posted on facebook that the millions of people see in the mobile version or mobile facebook app....

if a person is to tap on those link to visit the sites using the smartphones... would it not be a much better user experience that those external links where served as mobile friendly too? regardless if they are a blog or brick and mortar business...

there's a reason facebook created a mobile friendly version of the their site and an actual app... the regular desktop site on a mobile device would just not cut it... the end mobile user experience would basically suck... check out the top 250 websites on alexa and you will find that almost all of them adopt a specific mobile optimized website (Note:NOT responsive design) theres a reason for this... and i don't think its because mobile marketers are telling them to do so - but more so to embrace the change in user habits and provide the best end mobile user experience and to reduce bounce rates of their mobile visitors...

due to the huge increase in mobile users using just this platform alone, (which you pointed out) and the use of external links to me it makes more sense more than ever to go mobile... why risk losing potential revenue or traffic for not simply adding a mobile solution to your web presence...

Sorry, I am too busy helping people to think of a cool signature!

In the early nineties, businesses were saying "I don't want people to visit my website - I want them to call me or come into my store." And some business still have this perspective, but obviously they're missing a huge market segment of online customers. To be fair, this might be ok for some businesses.

Ultimately "what you want" doesn't carry a lot of weight with people; they will visit your site from a little mobile phone because that's what they want.

You can either adapt to what they want, or you can ignore the market segment of mobile users. And again, to be fair, this might be ok for your business.

You really need to look at the current desktop website you are using - see if it is CMS based and if you can use a tool/framework/plugin/addon/theme of sorts to do the work or simply create one manually or use a service to do it for you or of course you could outsource it too....

Main considerations i would look at are what are the objectives and goals of the mobile site, and your budget and the time you want to spend maintaining it.

There very rarely is a true one glove fits all or a simple silver bullet when it comes to mobile...

Understanding your options and the pros and cons will help you considerably making that choice and save you possibly a lot of time/money

Do people sign up to lists from a mobile? I think if they enjoyed my site they'd take 2 minutes to read it from a computer/tablet every week.

Is that selfish?

It seems to me that mobile sites are about as much use as people reading your articles from an RSS reader.
Humm. Don't you wonder then why Google and Facebook decided to have a mobile version( m) of their website:rolleyes:

I mean really how many people sit there for hours browsing the web with their phone? I mean come on.... Now a tablet I can see and understand but a cell phone? No thanks. I had a samsung galaxy 2 (which has a wide screen and super fast browsing) but I only used it to see something specifically. People really don't use phones for web browsing but more so for quick access to view links in emails or ads in apps.... IMO... thoughts?

Like others have said, it is an absolute no-brainer for location based businesses or certain service based businesses (taxis, limos, locksmiths, electricians, plumbers, etc) to have one but what about people who blog and or sell things online or do anything online for that matter?

Have you ever found yourself waiting for a friend or riding transit and reading someone's blog or getting an email for a new product launch?

If it's not mobile friendly, I'm outta there.

I'm sure I'm not the only one.

A good mobile experience is absolutely necessary today.

Cheers,

Well, you can place a sign to your website which displays the following message to your mobile visitors:

"Don't look at my site from your mobile phone, go find a computer or tablet and come back."

or you can reconsider your approach.

Whether you call them "mobile sites", "mobile versions" or whatever, the main idea is to build a website that provides a good user experience to your visitors whether they are viewing your site on a desktop computer, a laptop, a tablet, a smartphone or on their TV.

A true marketer or web designer should never say what you've just said above. Nobody can control their visitors' behavior. Whether you want it or not, people will look at your site from their little mobile devices and instead of luring them away, it is better for you to make your site work well on that little devices as well.

Having a mobile website is crucial nowadays, think of all the traffic your missing out on? the answer is A LOT. In your situation you are probably better off giving the visitor the choice when logging onto your website from a mobile device.

if you don't like that idea...the wordpress theme optimised for mobiles are getting better!

Exactly right. That is why having a mobile optimized site is SO important. A lot of mobile users are looking for quick access to specific bits of information.
