For effective commercial reasons considering the large growth in smartphones? Would this be an extra expense? Thanks.

Of course. It's not necessarily a significant expense. Also if a business tries to expand their visibility through mobile, they should consider a native mobile app, too. It depends on the business type, and the objective of the business.

A .mobi is not needed. In most cases just creating a subdomain such as m.yourdomain.com will be sufficient. However if for whatever reason you want to separate your mobile site and put it on a .mobi then that can work as well.

In my Italian proposal for building mobile sites, I just insert a MOBI domain name as free gift for tempting buyers to accept my offer, but in real life I've setup a lot of website on the same domain name, with a simple automatic redirector. On this way who connects to the website with a cell phone will be redirected to the right mobile website, and who access with a pc could enter the normal website. So I can say a MOBI domain probably is good for the business itself, because it's a well known domain format who the business can use just for mobile, easily. See you soon, Alessandro Zamboni |

I don't think there is any harm in businesses buying the .mobi version of their domain name -- infact with the way the Internet is heading I think it's a very wise investment for any business. Let's face it. A .mobi domain is about 9 dollars per year so it's not a huge expense.
