How Can I Find A Decent App Developer?
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Hey warriors,

I'm looking for a decent mobile app developer (hopefully with a reasonable fee) who can basically create an app that can retrieve some personal data from our customer database so that they can easily see their current status with our service (sorry - can't say too much here)...

I can surely go to eLance.com, oDesk etc.. and post a job there... But I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a better way to find a decent app developer as I cannot afford to pick a wrong one and end up having a management nightmare....

I'd appreciate your input!!!

Thanks

Your best bet is to use elance or odesk for custom work. If you need basic apps there are many app builders that let you build apps yourself with little tech skills required.

Not sure this is adding to the conversation about finding a developer but I would make sure when you post the job listing that you are clear about getting a native/hybrid/web app built. The price you pay for the app will vary depending on which style you go for.

I have known a couple of guys get stung with their app when they received a web view app and paid native app prices. The outline below should be useful to help you understand what to look for in a developer/ app project.

Web View - Any developer should be able to create a web view app for you - there are even websites that provide this as a server. A web view app is normally written in HTML5 and is basically a mobile site wrapped in an app frame. This is the cheapest option.

Native - This is where the app is written in Objective C (if you are talking about iphone apps) and the price normally reflects this. These apps will be able to interact with all the features of the device.

Hybrid - These apps are often written in javascript and use a middleware component to compile them and allow you to access some of the devices features.

I think when it comes to picking the developer you need to review their apps and ask questions about what language/style of app they have been developed with.

Its also massively important to produce a good spec as this way you will avoid disappointment with the end product.

I hope this advice helps.

Hey Michi Kono
Since a lot of people are getting indulge into business of mobile apps development and claims them to be the best, it is really hard to find good one for your job.
I will suggest you to search wen for mobile application development companies and go through all the apps they have build in the past. Check their product apps and discuss your project with them.
The process sounds pretty hectic but it is worth to be done if you want to be on a safe side.

I am Daniel Jones, working in a Mobile Application Development Company as a Mobile App Developer. I enjoys exploring apps on iOS, blackberry, android and other mobile platforms.

No worries - It's a huge investment of both time and money when you are thinking about contracting someone to build an app for you and doing your homework beforehand is going to save you a lot of hassle in the long run.

you can find them from many sources. google, social networks, own networks, Professional networks like linkedin and so. But you have to very careful while choosing them. most of them give assurances interms of time, quality and many other factors. But very few only satisfy their customers.

You can try Innoppl mobile application developers for your any kind of app development needs.

I would second this idea ... you can even put your city in the search term and find a developer that is local. Then you can take a look at any recommendations they have received to get a better idea of their quality.

It is true that you will come across many mobile app developers in your search for one of the best. Choosing the right one may seem a bit difficult than anticipated. If you know any friends, who may have interacted with such a professional in the past, then you may get in touch with that friend. However, checking out some sites of mobile app developers may also help you. Here you may get to know about their fees and also how long they have been in this field. These should help you decide.

Great Topic, in a recent product offering the author of the product attempted to sell a product that many have attempted to do in the past, (relied on Outsourcing the Mobile Application Development process) Which is fine, anyone can do it, but can you really be successful in a situation that you do not know what you need to ask for and often the outsourcing provider does not speak English well enough to grasp your attempts to describe the application to that developer.

It is a huge mess and a recipe for Disaster...

Yet hundreds bought this product expecting to be able to produce Mobile Applications as promised in the product, then they wake up and realize that they have been had.

In the cold light of day they use Odesk, Freelancer, and other outlets and they receive insane estimates for Simple Application development.

(Why is that?) The reason is simple, there is an element of Middle man, (or woman) who know developers, they are most often called brokers, they Bid on your project, and they intentionally bid high, regardless of how difficult or easy your project is.
The problem is that when other "real" developers see the high bids they also bid high thinking that the project must be difficult so they bid high too.

The end result, is that you pay a higher price because your not aware of these "Dirty Tricks" You may not know enough about all the myriad terminology and use of key phrases that could significantly lower your development costs.
For every One, Good Developer there are 1000 bad ones that are waiting to tell you what you want to hear and then proceed to rip you off.

That is the truth and that is what you will not read in these products that claim you can become wealthy if you just buy the mobile product of the day.

Just be aware that it is not as simple as these products claim it is, (you know it deep down inside anyway, ) If it were that easy everyone would be rich from mobile apps...
Just a few words to clarify the very real money pit that is mobile development, it is not easy, but it can be done, it is not cheap, but it can be developed at a fair price, it is not simple but it can be created you just have to take the time to learn enough about the process to be able to communicate what you want and then have the patience to weed through the garbage to find the diamonds.

To choose the right mobile app developer, you may use the abovementioned eLance and Odesk, search for IT companies on business directories, apply social networks, ask for advice on other forums. Discover their profiles and thoroughly read the references. Check whether they have experience in the similar projects.
