SMS marketing - How does it work and how can I make money with it

Hello warriors,

I was reading a topic here about someone that offered sms marketing as an upsell to some service for about $300 per month.

Can anybody explain to me shortly what it is? How can a business use it? Why it's needed and how can I offer this service to businesses?

Hi Marian, sms marketing can be used in a number of ways depending on the type of campaign you want to run for you client. The main element of any SMS campaign is list building ie getting people to type a keyword to a short or long code. Once that happens the user gets added to a list and depending on what the campaign is setup to do any number of actions can happen. Some examples of possible SMS campaigns:

Text to Win
Auto Responders
Surveys
Appointment Reminders
SMS mass notifications

These are just a few examples of what you can offer your clients. Generally speaking you mark up the per message cost to the client and charge a monthly management fee to manage all the campaigns and list building for the client. End users get charged regular text message rates according to their phone plans.

If you're based in Africa and want to offer SMS services to businesses based overseas (Europe, USA etc), how can you go about this? Is this a feasible project worth considering???

It is like building a list but via text messaging and not email marketing. Businesses can use it for special coupon offers, VIP club announcements, daily deals on a slow day, appointment reminders, etc. The ideas are endless for the creative mind.

SMS marketing is used basically for promoting your services and products to your targeted audience. For example if your are in the industry of mobile website development you can run a SMS marketing campaign targeting small business owners for getting projects. For running a campaign you can hire some marketing firm and pay them for the number of leads they follow or according to their norms.
