folks, i was just speaking to someone who reckons most sites now can automatically go into mobile mode when being viewed on a mobile device thus selling mobile only will soon be a worthless exercise, does this arguement carry any weight??

I Kind of agree, there's quite few platforms that automatically adjust to ipads/mobile devices. But again not everyone yet have those.

If you are talking about responsive themes then I would have to disagree. Although they are better than nothing, I do not think they are comparable to a true mobile site. In most cases desktop sites contain alot of content that is not needed for a mobile site. Responsive themes do not address this issue, as well many times things seem to be out of place. I guess if you have a very basic website this may work but you should not have to design your desktop site in a way that it "responds" correctly on a mobile device.

Mobile marketing is much more than a mobile website anyway. It is about using creative methods to drive people using their phones to mobile sites, landing pages ect through the use of QR codes, SMS, mobile PPC and so much more. The reason for this is simple, mobile conversion rates are very very good.

Heck no it hasn't passed, that's crazy talk, heretic heretic.
I know where I am marketing, Its a beautiful product to present. Yes I see on my dynamics when I'm out calling, but I just move to the next non dynamic. (yea I dig low hanging fruit). Plus if I'm not mistaken that m. is kinda important from search positions. Look, if you wanna know whats trending Googles our bud, and they say...... and they are dropping big money into mobi solutions ..good enuff fer me...

If this were true, that websites can "automatically go into mobile mode", ask your friend if he recons why Google is spending millions to encourage people to improve the mobile experiences they offer their clients and partnering with companies like Duda to make this happen?

Even if every new website was built with responsive technology (which like MoBuzz mentioned, i agree doesn't always provide the best mobile user experience) there are hundreds of thousands..perhaps millions of existing websites that could benefit from having a mobile only version of their website for their users.

So in my opinion, no, that ship hasn't sailed and will probably be in port providing opportunity for mobile developers for years to come.

A converted version of a Website will never replace a real mobile Website for many reasons:

1) A standard Website get too much information.
2) The button or images are not optimized
3) A Mobile Website is focus on sale (Like get to the point and no blabla)
4) A Mobile Website need some specifics features like direction or call to action
5) and many more....

Google Maps Contact Extractor, a google maps scraper software (Scrape google places data)
Yellow Pages Scraper software an easy to use Yellow pages scraper software
Yelp Data Scraper software, extract data from yelp website.
Management-Ware Extract Anywhere, Website data extractor software, create your scraper to extract data from almost any website. Door to door CRM software.

What you are saying only holds true for a VERY small minority of websites.

The market for mobile is still only in it's early stages. I don't know how you could possibly think it's over already.

Don't listen to everything your friends tell you...

A site will only go into 'mobile mode' if it has been made to do so.
This will be down to placing code in the header of the site or using a plugin to detect the browser and serve up content or use a css sheet based on the browser.

Selling mobile only is only 1 option, you could also make the original site mobile friendly just by writing a new css and adding the code to the site to use this for mobile and still charge a decent amount for doing it, infact you could charge more for this than making a seperate mobile site.

I have to agree with Will and take it a step further.

This are millions of sites have not been updated in the last few months.

Millions more that have had no structural updates in years. These site are no where near mobile ready. Again we are just getting started with mobile optimized sites and true mobile apps.

Re: mobile boat has passed??

This is taken from a recent Google study:

While nearly 75% of users prefer a mobile-friendly site, 96% of consumers say they’ve
encountered sites that were clearly not designed for mobile devices. This is both a big problem and a big opportunity for companies seeking to engage with mobile users.

Source: What Users Want Most from Mobile Sites Today | Think with Google
There is still a HUGE opportunity.

A basic thing like a phone number, the thing that you want people using, will not automatically be turned into a click to call option on a website unless its coded in. If a simple thing like letting the mobile user just click the phone number to call is not automatically converted than I say no.

just my opinion. Dont over look certain key features for mobile.

Actually iPhones and Androids and most other smartphones will actually automatically detect and convert telephone numbers to clickable links. Unless you add the following line into the header of your page:

Code:
<meta name="format-detection" content="telephone=no">
The reason you may want to add that is sometimes auto detection picks up strings of numbers that are not actually telephone numbers ie order numbers, skus, etc

A similar approach can be applied to addresses too...

Speed, validation and over all end user mobile experience is key to being mobile optimized - a site that is squashed down to fit the phones viewport and requires the visitor to pan and zoom around the site just to read content is not what i consider to be mobile friendly...

Hope that helps.

PS Just like others have said - mobile is still in its infancy! Don't just take our word for it go checkout Google's GoMo Initiative...

Sorry, I am too busy helping people to think of a cool signature!

Not only are these websites old and dusty, many are using Flash as a splash page. For instance, there seems to be a unwritten rule that restaurant websites need to be created purely out of Flash.

Apple products out of the box cannot read Flash, you need a third party plugin. Most people aren't going to know why they cannot see the website (or really care) & simply navigate away.

From the stats I see on my own and clients websites - mobile surfing isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Yes, I too agree with this. Mobile sites have just started. There are millions of sites which need to be redone and can't be automatically adjusted to be mobile friendly.
