Garage,yard sales

I thought it might be an idea to make a mobile site of listed garage, yard sales, flea markets. You could charge them to list their ads for the weekend and map their location so buyers could travel between sales on weekends.
Any thoughts!

Coming from someone who's made good money buying/reselling garage sale items, I'd certainly find good use from that app, but I don't think the casual garage sale shopper sets it out in their mind that they need to map their course. I'd be willing to bet that people are driving by and something at the sale triggers them. With that said, your target market would be the pro deal hunters.

Where I live we have a couple of sites that allow free listing of garage sales.

One of the sites only charges for specific types of listings - like high ticket items (cars, etc). They also carry a donation button.

Garage sales are a LOT of work for most people. Typically, I think most exposure happens through the newspaper still - where I live anyway.

Perhaps if one had a list of locals who liked to do the tag sale thing, you might collect funds from those who'd like you to do an email blast.

Otherwise, I'm not sure I'd personally feel confident or right about charging for garage sale listings - but that could just be me.

You'd have to test your own market.

I also think all these types of sites should be mobile by default - so again, I'd not want to charge for the service. There are still many ways to monetize the site.

Keep this in mind also - I just did a last minute house clean out for a realtor in my area. Part of my strategy was to post a garage sale on Craigslist for free - place was packed and most of the stuff went - saved me from taking it to the dump). Might be a tough sell. Most of the people that came to mine owned thrift shops etc.

If I did it I would do it as a proximity type GPS app. When there is a garage sale within 2000 feet it might pop up a message or show a listing for everything within a mile on a google map. Not sure how you monitize it but that would be interesting to those that "Brake for Garage Sales".

I believe that most of garage sale hunting is done on craigslist or in the newspaper... There is an iphone app that automatically maps out the garage sales from craigslist, and includes addresses and descriptions.

It is called "Garage Sale Rover". I am not sure if one exists on android or not. The benefit is that it is free. It isn't always 100% accurate, but people love free!!

I think Garage sales listing website would do nice business. Also Jill Carpenter's idea of having a Donation button is really good. You can encourage the people to list in your website by giving some exciting offers. Also having a app is a nice idea.
