I've searched this forum but cannot locate an answer to this question, so I'm really sorry if it's already been addressed. A neighbor recently lost her job and I'm trying to think of ways she can work for herself. I'm a writer and is how I make a living, but she's leaning towards off-line work. I know mobile websites are big right now and I suggested she finds business owners who have just a regular website and offer them a mobile version. Her immediate question was, how does she do this? and (as I'm not an off-liner) I had no answer for her. So - my question is, if she searches for a list of (for example) dentists in her location and Google returns a list, complete with a link to their regular websites, how does she determine whether or not they already have a mobile version? Thanks for your help.. |

She can check it from her phone and see if it is a mobile version. generally the url will start with m. Also check here for the sites if she comes across anything: Test Your Site Manny |

She can use this site, it'll show her if the website is mobile, then she can use snip tool to take a screen shot of the image, and include that in her email, or print it out and take it with her if she is making face to face visits. Or, she can show them the site on her phone if she visits in person. Opera Mini simulator |

Why not invite her to use this forum so she can obtain these answers on her own? It is really nice of you to try to help her like this, though!

Hi Annie, just have her do the prospecting from her phone. If she is using the method you mentioned "searches for a list of (for example) dentists in her location" she can follow the links from her phone to see if they are mobile friendly. Can also do this on Facebook as well. Follow advertising links from a mobile and make a list of the ones that do not have a mobile version.

Using Safari for web browser, with its useragent set to iphone, is also a good way to determine whether or not a site has a mobile version - and although it's not 100% accurate, it is pretty close. Even if she contacts a local business owner who happens to already have a mobile version in place, a quick apology is enough to move on; if anything she may stumble on an owner who's not happy with their current mobile site and wouldn't mind paying for a better one. Best of luck. |
