What are the types of mobile apps? Not sure if I making myself clear here.

I always thought there are local business apps & games apps. Turned out I was wrong (silly me!) M-commerce, utilities & chat apps are names I've just heard about a few days ago.

So how many are they? Can I get a complete list of the types of mobile apps? Also, anyone know of good companies that offer app creation service I can outsource clients requests to?

I'd like to know more about web based apps as well - if there are types of them & any good companies that accepts outsourcing requests.

For simplicity there are two main core groups of mobile apps which are;

a) Entertainment (having fun) - games etc. - where the most money is made
b) Productivity (getting stuff done) - business, lifestyle, info etc.

These then break-down into subgroups like you've mentioned and there are new groups being developed as new ideas become available online.

You'll also find many terms used interchangeably in different contexts and by different people.

Go into the app markets and check out some categories or do some searching based on ideas.

Mobile apps are applications, or programs, made for for the operating system of a smart phone. A selection of apps come with the phone. In this sense, the phone on a smart phone is an app!

Additional apps can be found on iTunes or Google Play. Some apps you download free, some you pay to download.

The term app is often used ("wrongly") about a mobile site. A mobile site is a normal website. It is coded with html/css/php and it lives on a server. The layout is designed to fit easily on small screens, and functions for touchscreen are added. A mobile site will display just fine on a bigger screen, but will look funny. Mobile pages are also called mobile landing pages.

As to the number of apps on the Android's Google Play there are roughtly the same number of apps as on the iOS App Store but the thing is that to this day the most valuable apps on Google Play made by Google, the majority of apps are...not that great :-(

There are a lot of mobile apps nowadays. Especially we are now living with great creators and experts. We have application for health such as yoga.
