I've been browsing the forum about hosting mobile websites for your clients and most says the same thing over and over, host on clients site with: m.sitename.com or sitename.com/mobile. This is fine for mobile developers that are already working on the existing desktop site and can access to hosting account. But for most of us, it's not the case because 90% of local businesses have their mobile site and we are targetting those clients. So let say you have a mobile webdesign company and sell mobile sites for clients but solely rely on hosting at your own place for these 3 main reasons: 1- you can charge monthly fees 2- many existing website, webmasters are recurrent to host your mobile site at their hosting place. 3- you have full control for updates Some wrote: host on: clientname.designcompay.com or designcompany.com/clientname I think it's ok but what if you have hundreds of client sites to host? I can tell you, you won't be confident with it just in case by accident you ve published on your main site designcompany.com someones site, It can happen when you have many clients and ftp all day long or install wordpress or any database driven scripts for your mobile website. You still can go with hosting reseller account and host each site one by one but you will need as many domain name as website needs or use cpanel for aliases. What a huge task. Some of my clients wants their businessname.mobi so I could get a reseller account and host their domain there but that's not what I do to effectively manage my clients sites. Here is the solution I came with: Get the shortest .mobi (3 or 4 letter) you can if possible easy to remember, pronounceable... Why because they can type in url even if they don't have a .mobi domain, I have clients that do this and are more advertising their coupon codes then url or have a redirect to my hosting. Also when it redirects as I dont hide the url link it shows my short ulr at end nicer than yourdesigncompany.com I also give free trial or free url and that's the url I give them. Here is an example: reg: vww.mobi Host client sites on vww.mobi/businessname It's easy for them to remember and it is short, it looks branded (vww) and when they ask me why it's not www, I say that it's my special url to host mobi (v=virtual w= wide w=web .mobi) You can do with mww or any available short .mobi You can also redirect the main homepage to your webdesign company .com so it will only be accessible from clients mobile sites. Hope this post helps some members here. |

Sorry for the confusion because I didnt explain in detail that when you reg for example a domain like: mww.mobi it is usually www.mww.mobi but with .htaccess you can remove WWW from URL or with wordpress too. So it looks like a domain hack mww.mobi instead of www.mww.mobi then you host at mww.mobi/clientbusiness/ Hope it's clear now. |
