I have heard that mobile traffic isn't good for sites. is that true or not?

I would agree with that statement if your site is not designed to appeal to mobile visitors. They will just leave. However if you have a redirect on your normal website to send mobile visitors to a site designed for the narrower format, then of course it's going to be good. You just engaged one more opportunity to achieve your final goal of getting another customer.
