Where have you found sales people?
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

I've been trying to find sales people to sell my mobile services now for a couple months. Looked at online sites like guru and odesk and am not finding anyone.

I'm looking for people who will work on commission. Is this too much to ask for any more?

Thanks in advance for any tips you can offer. Oh, if you have a craigslist ad that has worked for you I'd love to see it! Tried that as well with no luck.

I have tried to find someone as well. Not having the best luck. I think I am getting warm on a sales person though.

I have found that promotional "models" that are hired for liquor companies or clubs are interested in this kind of work. The problem is they do it on their own time and are not very committed.

Craigslist has brought in only 2 leads for sales people for me and it did not work out.

I used to be in the sales field so I have connections with prior employees. Try talking to your circle of friends and see if they know sales people.

This is not a new problem. I ran a custom point of sale software company for 30 years and tried in vain to find salespeople that would have the same passion I did. I finally hired programmers to take over my job and did the selling myself.

I am in the same position as you and started advertising for Business Development Specialists on Craigslist where I have gotten a couple of interested parties from 5 who initially replied to the ad.

All I can say is to keep trying and maybe tweak your offer/advert/approach.

Good luck!

Craigslist is usually a good resource, but if you're having a lot of trouble finding someone it's probably because you're not offering a good compensation plan. You have to ask yourself when you are looking for help "is this something I would be excited about." If the answer is no, than you should expect to have trouble finding someone and if you do find someone chances are they won't be very motivated.

I advertised for a number of weeks on Craigslist and no-one even contacted me to register interest.

I offered them 50% commission, professionally prepared sales material and (once they were working with me), a lot of detailed sales information in a restricted area of my website.

The 50% commission would have been on prices such as $250, $300, $500 and probably higher for heavily customized work.

I've been testing some referral leads and they are always super warm. I network with friend, family and other small businesses online and have them get me the leads. It's the best sales team one can have!

Will anyone create sites for me on commission? I'll pay you when I get some revenue?

(edit) It's funny to see so many threads/posts about how tough sales/telemarketing is but then see threads about offering sales people little more than a hope and a dream, treating it as an afterthought, and wondering why they don't go gangbusters selling your product/service on straight commission. haha. Treat sales people like any other "customer", offer them real value for their services.

Here's my advice on this with about 10 years of executive management under my belt...

Step back from the role of CEO for a minute and pretend that you are a Rockstar salesman. You're that guy in the Laquinta commercials selling 50,000 ice cubes to Eskimos, and you don't give a crap about a salary because you can make a killing in straight commissions consistently month after month. And today, you just got word that your present employer is shutting down/merging with a bigger company/whatever, but the bottom line is you need a new job. But you aren't worried... you can work anywhere selling anything. So you hit the job sites and look for opportunities, and stumble across [your] ad.

Would YOU, as the sales Rockstar, respond to your ad?

Be honest.

Because here's what's going through the sales guy's head:

1. Why aren't they offering a base? Is it because they can't afford to?

2. Will this company be around in a year or two?

3. Are they providing the tools and marketing collateral I need to sell?

4. Do I get an actual DESK in their office, even though I may stay "in the field" and never use it?

5. Are they providing LEADS (via appointment setters), so I'm the guy who CLOSES the deal, or are they expecting me to both prospect AND close?

6. Since there is no base, is the product price and resulting commission HIGH ENOUGH and IN DEMAND enough that if devoted a full 8 hours a day I could make more money doing THIS than any of the other opportunities out there?

7. Can this company SERVICE these accounts if I bring them in?

These are the questions they're asking when they read your ad. And I can tell you, you WILL NOT find quality, dedicated sales people unless all of the above variables work in their favor.

What are they making per sale and, reasonably, how many could they sell in a week? What would they make if they hit that number? For example, "Long term residuals" might sound like a great offer to YOU, but they aren't attractive to the sales person without a base salary.

I don't know exactly what your product is, but lets say the average commission is $500 ... can they realistically sell 3 of these a week? Can you handle them if they do? And if the commissions you're offering are lower than that, you're upping the total they need to be able to sell.

Basically what it comes down to is that good sales people can work anywhere - so why would they pick you? If you can solve that problem with an attractive compensation and take all of their fears away, you'll find great people all the time.

Your top people will always command base pay. Unfortunately, the myriad of people on Craig's list offering a commission only sales position for a suspect business set-up have poisoned many a salesman from even considering a commission only position. Try saving a little money and offering a sign-on bonus once the person makes a couple of sales. It's gonna be hard without a base pay unless a financially secure salesperson sees what you are trying to sell and just figures they can hit it out of the park no problem and will do so for the thrill as much as the cash. Also, you need to be up front with what they are going to sell. Don't hide any details.

Good luck.

Re: Where have you found sales people?

Over 30 years, I've successfully recruited thousands of commission only sales people and a big mistake that inexperience commission only sales recruiters make is that they advertise for experience sales people and if they get someone to respond to they advert, they try to sell the job to them.

But ignoring all that, if you going to recruit commission only sales people you should have the following points in place first, or at least, a way to achieving them relatively easily.

Saleable product/service - with proven track record: what figures can you provide such as number of calls, to number of appointments to number of sales presentation to number of sales. If you can't provide these figures, you'll either need to get them yourself, hire someone to get them for you (which defeats the object of commission only), or find a sneeky way to do it.

Short sales cycle: is it possible to close the deal quickly - commission only sales people will not hang around for ever waiting for sales/commissions

Plus the few other points.

I suppose recruiting commission only sales people is just like anything else, it's easy when you know how and a bitch when you don't.
