Are People Using QR Codes
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Anyone know if the general public is even using these things?

I mean I use them if I have time, but I don't go out of my way to use them. Plus, I consider myself more on the techie side of things, so I'm part of a tiny group of people I know who even know what a QR code is, let alone what to do with it.

I'm just curious.

Good question , I dont at all really.

However there is some circumstances when syncing an app that you can just take a picture of a QR code to input the data instead of keying it in yourself which is nifty but other than that no

Well, you do see it in a lot of places around, so probably people are using QR codes. It does beat having to type in the entire URL of a business to find a contact number for them, whereas you might be able to give them a call directly by just scanning the QR.

Of course, it depends on how many of your customers know what to do with a QR code when they see it. But it was only a few years ago when many did not have a touch screen phone, and now that is not the case. It's a changing trend, so yes I think people are using it.

It just takes a lot longer to educate people. What would really help adoption is if the mobile companies had QR reading capability embedded in the phone camera instead of relying on the person to have to download a separate app.

I think the QR codes are useful in many areas in more operations than just mobile marketing.

Hopefully they will catch on more here in the US. But I don't see it happen ending anytime soon. It will really take a QR code reader being built into the phones like it is in Asia. Maybe Apple could put it next to the "stocks" app

I feel it's kind of like a novelty thing. I've never seen anyone scan one despite them being everywhere. People have to download an app to scan one. If they have one, they have to go find the app and open it, possibly wait for it to load, then scan. It's just inconvenient sometimes. However, if all it takes is to wake the phone, access the camera from there (and have the camera be able to scan it by default) then scan, then people might bother to scan them more.

I've only ever scanned one when I first found out about them and wanted to try it.

It's great for a few of my clients.. QR Codes help them drive traffic to their Restaurant.. This gives them exposure, and lets them reach back out to them with special offers..

QR codes also started to penetrate into billboard and magazine/newspaper ads in my country but I have never seen anyone scanning a QR code yet. No idea how the situation is in other countries but I believe the public is mostly unaware of QR codes or what they are used for and they need some sort of education to learn how to use them.

Also, it is funny to see advertisers putting QR codes in difficult-to-scan places. I am even not sure they really know what QR codes are used for.

I have one on my business card. When you scan it, it simply takes you to the Google Play store or App store to download our app.

Part of the issue is that a separate app needs to be downloaded to scan. If it came with the default camera it would gain more traction.

I still feel QR codes are too much of a gimmick. The number of steps and the time it takes to load the app, scan the code and wait for the browser to open and load the site isn't much quicker than loading safari (iPhone) and typing/speaking the link in or using Siri.

QR codes can be real effective more on the operations side of business, lowering costs, decreasing customer service calls. Put a QR code sticker w/app download instructions on any piece of equipment that links to FAQ, maintenance, troubleshooting, parts supply, product manual etc...

It sure beats trying to do a search on the net on your phone for 10-15min to get the info. Especially ordering replacement parts, make it easy for customer to order from you and you won't have to be so price conscious.

I think there is tremendous opportunity to market this to businesses for their operations side, cutting costs, in addition to sales/marketing where most are focusing.

what if you made a deal with manufacturer so they put a prominent QR code sticker on their products, you handle the rest, pointing the code to a replacement part order page(filter for a wet/dry vac) or pointing to a generic lead gen site (QR on a furnace) and you make a fee for the referral to a local HVAC repair. You then give the manufacturer a commission.

I totally agree with that. If scanning QR codes was a default feature of devices, then the product sellers would advertise that feature as well and the buyers would know what a QR code was and how it is used.

I'm not particularly fussed by QR codes; i've never scanned one and doubt I ever will. Thee might be the odd exception one day but I wouldn't bank on it...

Re: Are People Using QR Codes

In my case I haven't found many US people using them at all. I made some flyers for some of my clients that had a QR code that linked to their Facebook Fan pages. We posted the flyers in the the business in an effort to help drive traffic to their Facebook page. Without exception, each one of the clients called me and told me that 90% of the customers had to idea what they were, didn't know how to use them and didn't have an app on their phone to scan the codes with. So I ended up using SMS opt-in with a link to the Facebook page and we got far more responses using the SMS.

Having said that...my wife was in a local craft show and just for fun, I took my laptop and printer and made QR codes for FREE for those who bought my wife's crafts..what kind of QR code did I make?
I bought some blank Key Chain plastic holders and I created a template and I made QR codes with the persons name and telephone number. I simply put the QR code into the plastic holder to attach to their keys and then I showed the person that if you scanned the code it would display their name and phone number so if they lost their keys someone could call them and return the keys.

I also made some QR codes that displayed a name and address and phone number to be used in pet tags for lost pets.

I made a QR code for a lady that listed her medications to carry in her purse.
One of my best friends is moving, So I made several QR codes that listed the contents in each of the moving boxes, that way when they started to unpack they could scan the code and see what was in the box before it was opened.

Made a QR code for a diabetic to attach to their keychain.

So while I haven't had much success in using it in my business I had a great response to making them at the craft show and got to educate alot of people at the same time.
