Do you host the mobile sites for your clients or do you install it on their domain?

For the client, I can understand that they would probably prefer the site installed on their server, but it's better for us to build a monthly residual income from the hosting fees.

For those of you hosting the mobile sites for clients, how do you approach this? What additional, value added services or rationale do you provide to discourage clients from having the mobile site installed on their domain/server?

The rationale is what ever you decide with in reason. But you could say that you will do small updates to the site as part of the monthly fee! Also as your mobi site builder creates more function and features you will include them if appropriate for their site etc.

Hosting the clients site is not really a bad idea. Not just additional income for site maintenece + hosting, it sticks the customer to you giving the option of future income in additions / updates / changes. Same for mobile / web sites.

I totally agree. I just want it to be a good value proposition for the client - a win/win for both.

I have had success with using the rationale that targeting mobile devices is a moving target (no pun intended). Constant new mobile devices coming on the market. By my company hosting the site, we will make periodic updates to the site in order to keep up with the new devices being released. In days past, you had a new IE or Mozilla major release every other year or so. With literally HUNDREDS of Android phones and tablets plus multiple versions of ios devices changes to the mobile site are needed often to ensure that all devices function properly on the site.

I have even argued successfully for hosting their desktop site, declaring that the mobile redirect script needs to be tweaked often for the same reason.

Tell them by hosting with you for only X you'll do maintenance and updates. What's nice is most sites will seldom need maintenance or updates unless it's a business like a food place that wants to change it's menu often. In those cases I would charge more.

I have mixed feelings about hosting the mobile site for the client but if you want a recurring income from your clients and if you can make a deal with a monthly price without offering hosting, then you will not need to host their mobile site yourself.
