SMS vs Push Messages
Share on:

Besides the cost of sms texting , is there a compelling benefit of in-app push messaging over sms?

One drawback is that your target audience have to have your app.

What else should mobile marketers keep in mind?

What's your application? Are you considering push vs. SMS for local businesses?

I don't see any other compelling benefits of push notification over SMS, besides there being no cost to the receiver.

Smartphone penetration among US cell phone users is just under 60%, so going with push notification narrows your potential audience.

SMS is ubiquitous, pretty much everyone with a cell phone does text messaging. But there are a lot of people with smartphones who don't (or rarely) install apps.

For SMS, besides the cost, although it send to more customers (those with or without smartphone capabilities), they are not niche and not targeted. There are some products/services that don't have large customer base, but they can succeed because of the "loyal" customer and mouth-to-mouth marketing.

I think in-app ads/push ads could contain graphics, while SMS is not. (but if you are talking about MMS, then it's the higher cost thing already).

That is the BIGGEST drawback in that push messages require the user to have your APP which is not always the case in a lot of situations.

Agree completely. Getting a text is easy and doesn't require much space on my phone. An app I have to download and use and it takes up more memory.

I personally never have understood small business Apps. They simply don't make sense unless you have a great spin like a game or something to make the app worth having. Text me if I like your business but don't ask me to download your app. I doubt I like you that much.

.I agree that a lot of businesses might not benefit from an app for their business but there are certain businesses that can greatly benefit from an app (even without a game or spin)...Most small businesses just need to understand how to use the app effectively and push notices are an integral part of marketing to their app customers...

I agree SMS messaging will reach a wider audience, but for certain businesses I can see a benefit for their customers to have an app as well

I have have small business customers that are using apps quite effectively and I also have small business clients that "don't get it" and their apps aren't doing anything for them....after all an app for a small business is just a marketing tool and if no one has the app downloaded then it will server no purpose. You also have to promote the download of the app as a business owner to encourage app downloads...

Just my 2 cents worth

Can you give some examples of small businesses where apps worked and what the app does and how they marketed it?

I agree Sms will bring you a wider range of audience. Mobile apps are still new and rising, maybe in time apps will take over.

that's actually incorrect - depending on the type of plan you have some SMS receivers ARE charged to receive SMS text messages.

Sorry, I am too busy helping people to think of a cool signature!
