Hey folks, which is better, push notifications through apps or paid text messages? How much do you pay to send your texts and which company is the best? |

SMS is much easier to get subscribers and send messages in my opinion. Push notifications to me always seem like annoying popups on a web page. If you give a good reason for people to opt in to an SMS list, you can build a nice list in a relatively short time. Twilio is 1 cent per message, pay as you go. Might be a cheaper source, but if so I haven't found it.

I am an App developer and therefore I like Push Notifications. They are very targeted and only reach the people who downloaded your app. SMS text messages on the other hand are like mass email lists on cellphones and in my opinion don't work very effectively.

SMS has a lot of legal nightmares associated with it. Push notification has been gaining decent ground and campaigns that we've ran through push channels have backed out pretty well.

I've tried both spectrums, and people don't download apps. They download games, fun apps, but business apps I see very low numbers and engagement. SMS on the other hand is easy to opt in, and text is received by every phone with no extra work required except opting in.

In our opinion, SMS text marketing is better because Push notifications require that you download their app. So put it this way, would you download an app at every restaurant you dined at? Probably not, but many of those restaurants you would join their opt-in SMS list. |

PN's are free so there is some value in that. Now BizApps has geo targeted pushes which is a great new feature that has awesome potential for directory or niche type apps. Also works great for businesses with multiple locations.

SMS may be more expensive in the long run since you pay per message. However, push notifications require you to have an app. If you don't know how to build the app yourself, chances are that you'll be hiring someone. So, push notifications may have an indirect upfront cost. Anytime an app is involved to send notifications, you have to keep in mind that perhaps not everyone has a smart phone. Not to mention, what if they don't have the platform that your app is developed for? SMS requires only an opt-in to setup on the client side. Any time you make it easier for the subscriber to get involved, the bigger the chances are that they actually will. | |

Push Notifications are by far the most cost-effective and the most targeted as well. But it really depends on who you are going after. The push notifications are obviously going to be meant more for customer retention as the SMS marketing would be more for customer acquisition. They play two different roles, you just need to figure out exactly what you are going to be using the services for. |

In the past I've written rather large replies about this. But I will give the cliff notes version. In almost all cases SMS will be better. Don't believe me? Please do the following. 1. Pull out your phone: If it isn't a smart phone apps will not work while SMS will 2. Open your phone and count how many small business Apps you have: For most people I would bet this is 0. Some might get as high as one or two. 3. Think of every restaurant, bar, stores that has a Text Club. How many have you joined? And would you be more likely to join if it was an App you had to download? 4. Repeat Steps 1 to 3 with friends, family, and strangers till you except that SMS is better or prove me wrong (if proved wrong please share the data on your survey with us all). |
