Use social networking free service. Example: Youtube, Twitter, Facebook !! Make a video of your app, tell people what it is about, features, pros and cons.Target potential customers, targeting the right audience may take your mobile application to the next level.

Submitting your app to free review sites can be a good way for your app to gain traction.

2.Find your competitors.
3.Choose the right category
4.Create an amazing icon
5.Take great screen shots.
6.write a good title, description and keyword.
7.Build a great landing page
8.Next step is to Launch
9.Push for as many downloads as you can in the first day itself.
10. Sign up for analytics app
11.Get featured on review sites
12.Reach out to media
13. Encourage users to share social networks and also for rate and review.

just post your app details with link on android forums like XDA and android forum. and you will get a lot of downloads. but i don't think app published on google play need any promotion.

Well, there are 2 options.

1) paid
2) Free

the best paid way is facebook mobile ads. You wont regret. I bit pricy though.

one free way is to list your app on Mobile Apps

Take a look at popular apps and see what they are doing.

If I was making an app I would make it so that it can go viral by itself, by that i mean, take a look at SnapChat, KIK and Viber, They all require your friends to have the app as well to use it effectivly, so then when someone downloads your app they share it with their friends and make them download it.

For advertising it online I would suggest Facebook ads, App Listing sites(there are probably a few), Android/iOS specific forums(they probably got a "your favorite apps" thread somewhere).

Share your app on facebook and other social media.

Optionally you could make a website with a generic "App Theme" from themeforest or make it yourself, then SEO it for your category "android app for sms messaging" for example.
