Hi all, I wondered what would work better show the business owner a mockup of their own new to be made mobile site , how them my pre-made collection of mobile websites or show them a competitor's mobile site ? I would think that if you show the neigbours mobile restaurant that they either think I want a mobile site as well or the other option they could respond negative when showing them the competition is doing better than them. Making mobile mockups takes up more time in comparison to showing pre-made mobile site or the competition's mobile site ! What works best, what are your experiences with selling mobile. Cheers, Chris |

This is just my opinion on this. Eye candy is always nice and can for sure seal a deal. Showing something in my opinion is a must as most will not have much idea what you are talking about. Showing a few sample between there poor site and a kick butt looking mobile site general works good. With doing a sample of theirs though, yes its a good idea, but I think it needs to be limited. I have heard people doing a full blown sample before going in. I think this is not a good idea for a reason. Yes, if you can do a Main page sample only. It shows a dramatic difference and if done right will be enough to close. By doing a full blown each and ever page sample of the site, in my opinion it is in a way devaluing your service(in a sense). Your faced with those that will think, heck it already made it, ill get it cheap and grind him on the price and you also get those that may think it must not take long to make it, if you walk in with a full sample. Last thing you want is to have them think it doesnt take long to create it. Again, this is just my own thoughts. Each has their own selling way and some techniques work for some versus others. Defiantly, a main page sample can a lot of times just be more than enough to make it a sale. If you have the time to do it great and sometimes it may be worth it for a bigger client your going after if your sales pitch is a bit shaky. |

PM sent a week ago, so you have 2 options: To send them a link that is not relevant to them OR To send them a link to a mock up of their mobile website Which do you think will get more conversions? In our experience the second one! We do this all the time and can close customers quickly by showing them their mobile site rather than a competitor. But using a competitor as an example of mobile success is great. Recent case study: I went out for dinner with my wife and went into a restaurant, we had limited time and the restaurant opposite was booked solid! So I looked at the full restaurant and it had a mobile site. Got talking to the owner of the place we where eating and asked him if "he was always this quiet?" He said it started 3 weeks ago, and looking at the mobi site this corresponded with the mobile site being launched of the restaurant opposite. I took my Blackberry out and showed the owner the mobile site and his restaurant site and told him I could create him a mobile site and we could do some mobile marketing. We left and a day later, the owner contacted me and asked for a mock up of HIS site - we had the order for 1 restaurant website $799 and mobile marketing at $199 per month for 12 months. Dexter. |

I answered your PM a while ago, but I know you know ! Well this is a really good way to sell. The restaurant owner was desperate to have a (mobile) website cause of his competition. Going out to dinner with beautiful women is hobby of mine so, I could join business with pleasure ;-) Maybe even better to have my hot date ask for the owner pointing out the problem on her Smartphone and than tell the owner I can help him with mobile website and marketing. A beautiful woman pointing this out to the owner hits home harder, well at least if they are not gay like the two owners of the pizza place I went to last time ;-). Thanks Dexter for the info, I'll keep you in mind for outsourcing when I am selling more than I can handle ! | |

Chris, if you don't have a portfolio to show to businesses, you could quickly create some sample mobile sites or a mockup tailored to that business using some templates or tools. If you didn't build the competitor's website, I wouldn't show that to them.
