Make sure that whichever politician you'll be supporting is sending messages to people that have opted in.

And even if they have opted in, be sure they know they will be getting SMS messages from a politician. I would be very cautious on this one. SMS is very personal, coming to people's cell phones. I wouldn't want a politician texting my phone. If you piss off enough recipients in any way, it could really hurt the politician at the ballot box.

Yup and be extra careful with the TCPA Policy coming out on October 16th.

I would only send to opted in people. Spamming with SMS is highly illegal. But it does seem that no one here at done it for politicians. Hopefully I can form some best practices to share with others.

I have a few ideas just wasn't sure what worked for others.

Aaron,

How do you see yourself using SMS for politicians?

I've never used SMS for politicians, but I'd be happy to brainstorm with you and come up with some ideas.

Do you think you want to use SMS to help raise money for the politicians campaigns?

Are you planning on building a list so you can remind everyone to go vote for the politician when it's voting day?

How do you plan on getting the list build...what, if any, incentive is there for the subscriber to join the list?

Basically the idea floated among myself one candidate's communication director, the county chair, and another candidate was to set it up like email.

Use it to blast a few links to blog posts and issues. Also use it to remind people to vote and to poll people on election day to see rather they voted.

One guy I would likely end up doing this for lost his seat in Congress two years ago and hopes to win it back. So this could have some potential at the national level down the line as well.

Really trying to figure out the best ways to use SMS within the overall marketing. Was hoping someone had done this previously that may have found things that worked or didn't work.

Overall my main idea is for them to treat the candidate like a business. And like a business to get the best customers(supporters) on multiple lists including SMS. The idea being to energize them in hopes that they will pull in non-voters who would support the candidate. Much like a restaurant's best customers bring them word of mouth business.

I think there is a lot of potential here if done correctly. You could really control the spin to your base and get them talking about issues that matter to them and that you believe will resonate with the undecided and non-voters.

Have you considered other methods than SMS? What about using digital passes (read: Apple Passbook)? These can be used sort of like digital business cards, and updated with events, issues, reminders, etc. as well as include links to any external sources. Can also be used with Android phones, thereby covering 95% of the smartphone market. Combining it with SMS is also an option. PM me if you are interested in more details. Our site is PassExpress

Here is my basic plan for SMS.

Most politicians will occasionally have presentations at bars/clubs/venues. These venues may have entertainment, plate lunches etc.

I propose to use Viral texting to build the number of people coming to the venue to see/hear/experience my candidates.

text2vip(dot)com has the best product I have found so far. (No affiliation, just a referral for their product.)

I have done this w/ rock concerts to increase the audience size very inexpensively.

This pic tells better than I can write this.

If you cannot see the pic.. it says:

"Thanks for joining <group>. Get 5 friends to text your code 123456 to <my short code> to win <something (Free tickets, free dinner, etc)> Rply stop 2 quit."

Then, it has a follow up text that the new receiver can forward. It says:

Please help me win <whatever>. Please text my code 123456 to <my short code> to help me win. You can get a code to win <same prize> also.

So.. my thoughts are that I can help fill a venue/event and increase exposure for the candidate.

Now, it gets good!

I now have a FULLY opted-in lead list! Now, I can send offers/requests to join the Facebook Pages. I can send links to grab their Facebook ID's and Emails. Once, I have their email, they get placed onto an autoresponder list for newsletters.

So, you see.. I may take a break-even on the initial event, but the goal of acquiring emails is paramount.

And, I may even charge the venue owner for filling their establishment and increasing awareness. Who knows.. i may gain an offline client in the process.

I do this with Rock bands and the results are amazing!
