I would say FREE apps, because people don't seem to invest their money on small things (It's my thinking). Unless they are selling Wifi password breaker kind of app, it could be premium.

Free, and then put ads on them once you have a large user base.

I've never clicked on a mobile ad but I've paid to upgrade an app to remove them plenty of times. I've also paid to upgrade an app into more features once I like it.

Both have their own advantages. If free one have all function as paid one, who want to spend their money right ? In contrast, they also won't pay for thing that they don't really need (excess function)

Free apps are easy to market as people don't mind going for free apps so much as compared to paid ones.

Right. Most people always go for free apps, it is easy to use and abandon whenever things go wrong.

Re: mobile apps free or paid

thisisraz65,
For iOS apps...... free apps are downloaded around 90% of the time. It's a little higher with Android. Paid games vs. their free versions can average out a little higher than the remaining 10% because they can be anywhere from a 1 dollar to 7 dollars for the "pro" version of that game. That makes paid games very profitable in comparison.

At the start when you create an app you need to create a free and a paid version.
Remember, a free app is just that..... no money for you ! Many app companies die fast without a plan. Think it through ! Start with a free app and go ahead and add mobile ads to it. You will not get much in return unless you can control what ads are shown and do some market research. More than anything you want to get downloads ! Lot of them ! The more users the better.

A good way to make money with free apps is to promote certain clickbank products or other affiliate products ( peerfly, neverblue ) on your app yourself ( NOT EXPENSIVE ITEMS ). If you are smart and add in your own ad placement funnel into the code of the app, you can control the content and test many different offers and adds to see which work. It's like adding someone to your list everytime they download your free app. It is very technical to set up and build an app like this, but it can be very profitable if done right. And it has to be done RIGHT to get it through Apple.

The last strategy is to create many simple and cheap to construct free apps like mirrors, daily reminders , flashlights, wallpaper, ringtones, and such. You don't need paid versions of these apps because they will be used to advertise or push notify your own paid app or game on them. I have seen this strategy become VERY profitable.

For traditional ads networks like Admob, BuzzCity, InMobi etc. you would have to have at least 50,000 downloads of a free app to see any real revenue ( there would be some money tricking in, but you really need to know mobile ads inside and out ). In general, you will not make much on the advertising unless you know what you are doing.

What works best, is you simply need to up-sell them from a free version to the paid version of your app. You need to add some extra features or info not found on the free version to add value to the paid version. And you will need to remove the ads from the paid version as incentive as well. This is the most cost effective way to profit doing apps.

Paid apps on iOS/Apple/iTunes earns a developer 70% of retail price.... so a dollar app earns you $0.70. A high-end popular game can cost $4.99 to $6.99 retail or more for the top version. You will not be able to charge this amount as a little developer and shouldn't try as very few consumers will pay more than a couple bucks for an app. And you don't have the advertising budget or marketing team needed to sell the higher priced apps effectively !

But, people do buy paid apps just fine. In fact, on my app store people download a fair amount of high paying apps. I am always surprised when I see that. The norm is $0.99 but if you have something cool and different .... it will get downloaded no matter the cost. So choose your app concept well .

None of these are methods will happen overnight. They all take time, money, research, and energy. I would be happy to answer any questions anyone has. thanks guys

I've found more success with the free apps.

It's easier to get downloads then add optin forms, ads, or affiliate links to monetize.

If the app is targeted properly in the market, it's much more effective to monetize with free than a $.99 download. But like others have said, it does depend on the niche and type of app being provided. I regularly download free and paid apps....

Free apps will download faster comparing to paid apps. And if someone has buy your paid apps then they can be able to cancel the purchase after half an hour and usually most of the people cancel the transaction after buy the apps and that will effect the account for getting banned.

I guess that the good choice is to develop freemium app. It allows to offers a basic, 'lite' version of a software product, which is free of charge; while a premium version (that has extra features, services or content) can be unlocked after a payment. It works quite well and give you a chance to test your audience.

That depends on the application, is not a general rule. If the idea is good then surely people will pay for it. Hovewer is preferable to offer a trial period, in order to be able to convince people that your application really works

Well said! I have a friend that writes for Lonely Planet and his app is free.. unless you want his "favorite spots choices" or "functioning maps" He still makes money from advertising. Even with his enormous following, he still doesn't see a substantial income from his paid version.
