Hey fellow warriors, I just had a question about text messaging. I've noticed its a strategy that many 'gurus' are beginning to implement as less and less emails are being opened everyday. Should this be a reason for worry for email marketers and should they diversify? |

The medium you use should depend on what you're selling. Text messages are short, the mobile form factor still pretty small, and there's (not yet) a rich text/multimedia messaging format. Text messages work FANTASTICALLY for local businesses telling people about a sale or something; but not so much if your audience is national or international in nature. Not only that, the "declining open rates" of email are a myth. While it's true that KIDS don't use email as much probably they aren't your audience anyway. Email is now, and likely will remain for at least the next 5 to 10 years, the primary method of electronic communication between adults with credit cards. Since nothing I sell is of particular interest to a 12 year old I can't say that the declining open rates among 8 to 14 year olds is of interest to me yet. Once those people get a job their communication will change as their needs change, and probably end up either at email ... OR messaging will end up with some kind of rich text capability at which point we as marketers will likely start using it along with email. Hope this helps. |

2 years ago people were saying SMS would replace Email... But then the government put a bunch of restrictions on SMS marketing to try to put a stop to "text spam"... So, the SMS option is a lot harder today than it was a few years ago, but with that said I do think it still has it's benefits. For example, if you work with a lot of offline businesses then SMS is a great tool for them. For me, I use SMS for text reminders of webinars. But if you plan to build SMS lists for the sake of sending them marketing messages then it might not be as effective as something like email. I personally have never took action on a "internet marketing" type of text message, but I have used lots of the "local biz" type of text messages where they send you a free coupon for a burger or something. Hope this helps. Cheers, Coby |

Yeah, SMS marketing is becoming more popular. This is mainly because SO many people are on their smartphones nowadays. If you are not using SMS marketing, then you really need to make sure that your emails, website etc are mobile friendly. A recent stat showed that 3/5 people on Google were on their smartphone. |

I would say that SMS should not be done on a small scale like email marketing can. Stick with emails i say.

I think it really depends on your niche and product/service you offer. Sometimes SMS really are the best option, but sometimes only emails will do it. Sometimes none of them...it is about testing, knowing your audience and testing again |

I think SMS might be a place to go, but you would need to have people optin and prequalify, as you don't want to spam and you don't want to be sending links or mobile offers to people with a non-smart phone | |

TJ, I would diversify some but email marketing doesn't seem to be dying anytime soon. I would focus heavily on building quality connections through a self-hosted blog. You own that real estate. If you own it, you'll likely be able to brand yourself with increasingly less effort. Then when trends change you can simply go with the flow, and do more text advertising, or email marketing, according to the trend but you can always do the blog thing and have your own real estate to build your campaign on. Keep creating, keep connecting and remember.....YOU are the big thing Anything you touch can turn to gold if you work on your mindset, create value and build connections with an increasing number of people on a daily basis. The proof is in the strength and number of your connections and the value of the content you create. Get these aspects of your campaign down pat. Any channel you use will tend to be successful because the toolmaker will have some serious skills at that point. All the best! |

Text messages are great, most people which check their text messages before they ever read an email.

Is text messaging the new "in thing" ? You know how you'll never be successful?.... ..Hopping from one new "in thing" to the next. Stick to a proven method : Email marketing. |

Its getting to be very popular right now because, if its used correctly, it is very, very effective. Currently text messages have a much higher open rate than email, and they're usually opened almost immediately. Email is still the backbone of any internet marketing effort, however, and can't be ignored. |

Text messaging is just another channel to get your marketing message out there. Mainly used for local business marketing now, I think it will gradually become used more in all types of marketing. Of course email will not go away anytime soon it will remain one of the top methods for years to come. I remember hearing this same thing when social media marketing suddenly became the "in thing." |

SMS? I don't know. I personally believe that email marketing is far better and more effective when it comes to marketing. At least if you are considering the sincerity and seriousness of a marketer. |

I hope it doesn't take off myself. I get enough email spam, don't want it on my mobile as well. And I have already gotten some.

Text messaging for some time has been the "It" thing but there is no way you can market in those circumstances. At least not so much. They wouldn't allow you to advertise on text messages as much unless you're the carrier.

Text Messaging is not the new 'in thing' because text messaging has been around for years. I agree with Stan though it depends on what you are selling. Text messaging might be effective for some businesses but some prefer voice calls or emails. |
